So here we are. The finale!! In case you have been living under a rock, it is down to Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. Tonight they will each be singing three songs. Their favorite performance of the season, a song chosen by Simon Fuller (American Idol creator) and the winner song which was apparently co-written by Kara. Should be an outstanding night.
Adam Lambert (Mad World): Good choice for his favorite. Understated Adam is my favorite. And the song allows him to be theatrical without being over the top. I also suspect since he laid low on this song we will see a crazy, screaming, rockin’ performance later on in the show so we see both side of him. Judges really liked it, as usual.
Kris Allen (Ain’t No Sunshine): Loved this performance the first go round. Absolutely love this song. Very definitive Kris performance- vocally flawless and very cool arrangement of the song. I think they are neck and neck after performance #1. Randy and Kara called it one of his best performances of the season. Simon said that he wasn’t sure he should have been in the final until he heard that performance and calls Kris the winner of round one.
Adam Lambert (Change Is Gonna Come): I thought this was a little bit of an odd choice for him because it leaned more towards bluesy and I see Adam as way more rock. But he definitely showed off his range and his vocal talent. I thought it might have veered a little too strongly towards the screechy at the end, but overall, it was a very good performance. Paula and Kara called it his best performance.
Kris Allen (What’s Going On): Ok, is Simon Fuller making some sort of political statement with his choices? I heard Kris say on the radio this morning that he was really disappointed with this performance. I really liked it. I thought he wasn’t quite as strong in his lower register, but I loved the power on the higher notes and I love how he just sings with minimal instrumentation. That shows just how vocally talented he is. Simon and Randy seemed to think it was too stripped down for the finale, but that was my favorite part about it.
Adam Lambert (No Boundaries): Dude, is this song cheesy. But I guess they always are. I thought Adam was a rather pitchy in this song, which is honestly very uncharacteristic. And I didn’t really feel like he was connected to this song. It wasn’t my favorite performances, but I think it might have been the song. Randy agreed with me. Paula and Kara loved it. Simon copped out and didn’t judge him on this song. He just showed his favoritism and praised him regardless of a lackluster performance.
Kris Allen (No Boundaries): Well to be fair, Kris was pitchy too. Can they not hear on stage suddenly or is it nerves. I do think this song suited him better than Adam, but neither of them shown at all on this song. In fact the performances sounded more like the first week of competition than the last. Kara and Randy both felt the song was too high for him which caused some pitchiness, but all the judges had high praises for him overall.
I think it was kind of a draw tonight. I must confess I am a bigger Kris fan then an Adam fan (although my heart still belongs to Danny). But I truly think either one has earned the title. Who is your pick?

It’s over now and Kris Allen is the new American Idol! I’m pleased; I’m from Arkansas and think Kris is very talented and, actually, quite awesome. Adam will be a superstar and do just fine without the title. In fact, I’m thinking he might already have contract offers lined up. He’ll probably make more money than Kris, too. I’ll be watching Kris’s career with great interest. Can’t wait to buy his first album!
wow, congrats to Kris Allen, he may have been surprised, but oh well, he won!
it seems like he’s gonna have to grow into his new “crown”
