Von Smith, You’re All I Need To Get By (Marvin Gaye): I am just gonna come out and say it. This guy annoys me. So I kind of wanted him to suck, but he did a really good job. His stage presence needs a little work, but the guy can really sing. And to come out and do that good right off the bat? Very impressive. He just might have won me over.
Taylor Vaifanua, If I Ain’t Got You (Alicia Keyes): This girl has a great voice for someone so long, but the problem with trying to do Idol when you are this young is that you just aren’t seasoned enough. Her performance was even and her stage presence needs a little work. The judges weren’t thrilled either and didn’t think her personality came through.
Alex Wagner-Truman, I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues (Elton John): This guy surprisingly has a good a voice, but man is he annoying to watch sing. But John Mayer has made is big and bagged Jennifer Aniston so maybe that doesn’t matter. He over sings though and really doesn’t need to cause his voice is nice without that. The judges seemed to agree.
Arianna Afsar, Winner Takes It All (ABBA): Well the judges are just right. She IS cute as a button. And she does have an amazing voice, but this song depressed me. It was so slow and boring. And I bet $100 one of the judges tells her the song was old fashioned and that she needs to have more fun. Simon does it right off the bat, then Randy. Why aren’t I getting paid to do this?
Ju’not Joyner, Hey There Delilah (Plain White Tees): I love this song. And I thought I was going to love this, but I kept waiting for it to kick in and it never did. It wasn’t that it was bad, just really, really boring. The judges loved it though so maybe I don’t know what I am talking about. Either way you gotta love a guy who admits getting a shot in his butt on live TV.
Kristen McNamara, Gimmie One Reason (Tracy Chapman): This girl surprised me. I didn’t know she could sing like that. I love what she did with this song making’ it all bluesy. And the girl has got some range. She might be a dark horse to watch for. I am not really sure why the judges were so hard on her. Leave the poor girl and her unstylish dress alone. She can SING!!
Nathaniel Marshall, I Would Do Anything For Love (Meatloaf): Oh Nathaniel. My mom taught me if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. I felt like I was watching a Saturday Night Live sketch. His voice is pretty good, but everything else just gets in the way. The judges don’t quite know what to make of him either. I think he might be done.
Felicia Barton, No One (Alicia Keyes): We don’t know this girl cause she is the replacement for Joanna Pacitti who had to leave the competition. I love this song and dangit, she even looks like Alicia Keyes. She did a really great job outside of a few sour notes. And her kid is so cute. The judges really liked her and encouraged her. I hope she isn’t handicapped by the fact that America doesn’t know her.
Scott MacIntyre, Mandolin Rain (Bruce Hornsby): This seems to be a really good song choice for him. I actually thought he did a really good job. He was pitchy in a few parts, but overall, a good performance, especially since he didn’t have his piano in front of him. The judges really like him too and he actually even charmed Simon.
Kendall Beard, This One’s For The Girls (Martina McBride): A bit of an uneven performance. She shouldn’t try to hit those high notes and there were some other pitchy parts. Some of it did seem nerve related though so maybe she can pull off a career in country. She looked super cute so there is that.
Jorge Nunez, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Elton John): Another guy with a good voice who bored me to tears. The rendition was just super cheesy and his performance style is also over the top cheese. The judges loved him, but I am going to have to pull a Randy Jackson and say that I just wasn’t feeling it dawg.
Lil’ Rounds, Be Without You (Mary J. Blige): Has anyone ever done Mary J. on this show before? Cause that takes some…well you know what that takes. I am a big fan of her, but I thought this performance was a little bit of a disappointment. Not that it was bad at all, but I just expected to be blown away. The judges were blown away and I think she will sail through.
