And then there were nine. The theme is….well I guess anything. As long as it is popular on iTunes. I have no idea what that means. I guess we will see.
Anoop Desai (Caught Up, Usher): I wasn’t sure he could pull this off, but he sang it well and brought the attitude necessary to the song. I am not the biggest Anoop fan, but I was really impressed. The judges didn’t seem to like it which I really don’t understand. Maybe I am losing my edge.
Megan Joy (Turn Your Lights Down Low, Bob Marley): What on God’s green earth is she wearing? That was not good. And she didn’t seem to enjoy herself. It was verging on painful and seemed to go on forever. The judges didn’t like it at all. I fear she is in trouble.
Danny Gokey (What Hurts The Most, Rascal Flatts): First off, everybody does not like Rascal Flatts. They could be my least favorite band ever. But I love you Danny so I will let it slide that you picked their song. Did anyone else think this song would be really hard to sing after losing your wife? I almost cried for him. He has completely redeemed this song. Amazing. The judges loved him. Even crusty Simon.
Alison Iraheta (Don’t Speak, No Doubt): I love this song, but I think the guitar really messed her up in the beginning. And then I just didn’t think this was a good song for her. She couldn’t be edgy enough. I liked the ending, but wasn’t a fan of much else. I can’t wait for Simon to take on the outfit. Oddly enough he hated it. As did all the judges. They actually barely critiqued the song. Overall, not a great week for her.
Scott MacIntyre (Just The Way You Are, Billy Joel): First off, who the heck did his hair? It is borderline mullet. That aside, I am not a Scott fan at all, but I thought he really shined tonight. The judges really praised him and rightly said that was his best performance of the season. Nicely done.
Matt Giraud (You Found Me, The Fray): I am like his biggest fan, but while this wasn’t a bad performance in anyway, I didn’t think it showed off what he can do like some of his other choices. Only a tiny bit of falsetto which is my favorite thing about him. Really bad song choice. The judges agreed and really came down hard on him. I hope he survives and takes their advice cause he is so talented.
Lil’ Rounds (I Surrender, Celine Dion): I can’t believe she thought this was a good song choice for her. I was bored to tears and there were a lot of parts she wasn’t even on pitch. We started to see a bit of the Lil’ everyone loves towards the end, but overall, I was not a fan at all. The judges bashed her song choice, but seem to root for her anyway. Her kids came out and were so cute, one even snuggled up to Randy. Adorable.
Adam Lambert (Play That Funky Music, Wild Cherry): Well he kept the look. Which I hate. This guys owns the stage when he is out there like few idol contestants before him. And what he does vocally is off the charts amazing. I didn’t think I was going to like this when it started, but by the end he had completely won me over. The judges love him as usual. Very entertaining.
Kris Allen (Ain’t No Sunshine, Bill Withers): Ok, he can play the piano too. Love that! And this is one of my favorite songs. And I really liked what he did with it. I agree with Paula, he is pacing this competition perfectly. I didn’t know this guy when the 13 started, but he is on fire. The judges called it his best performance to date. Loved it!!
Here is the general problem with letting the contestants pick songs from such a wide category. Too many pick songs they like rather than songs they will do amazing at. And we most definitely saw that tonight with too many poor song choices. Danny, Adam and Kris knocked it out of the park this week. I think Megan is most in danger, but I am worried for Alison and Matt too. Who do you think is gone?
