With a name like Really Old Airplanes, you’ll notice right off the bat that they’re not what you’d expect. In fact, they’re more than you’d expect. And let me tell you – when you start listening to their music? There’s no way to stop. It reminds me of Modest Mouse, but I play Really Old Airplanes far more, I have to admit. It’s an addicting sweet folk sound that will keep you coming back for more.
Luckily, I was able to get the answers to a couple questions, and I have to say, I think I love them even more.
1. How did you all meet and how did you all decide to form a group together?
- The majority of us have known each other for quite some years (from middle school all the way up to this very day). Evan the drummer met the rest of us at college and we all became good friends. It seemed like a natural occurrence that we would pick up our instruments and play them at the same time.
2. If you had to – absolutely, positively had to – describe your musical “sound” in one sentence or less, what would you say?
- Watching your favorite cartoon on an easy Sunday with a slight buzz from too much coffee, all of this being counterbalanced by the weight of the electric bill resting on your shoulders.
3. When people listen to your music, what do you want them to come away with? What impression do you hope to leave?
- Our favorite music is the kind of stuff that leaves a strange yet welcome feeling in your heart, one that you can’t quite put a finger on. We’d like our music to put a strange, welcome feeling in other peoples’ hearts so that they will keep listening to it throughout the rest of their years on Earth.
4. Which faraway land would you consider your dream location to play a show?
- Paul McCartney’s house. Or Hyrule in the SNES Legend of Zelda. Either one.
5. So how did you come up with the name Really Old Airplanes? Why not Geriatric Flying Machine?
- Forget about our old name, we’ve been obliged to change it to the incredible one you’ve suggested. Thank you for that!
You can check out more of Really Old Airplane‘s (or Geriatric Flying Machine) music on their MySpace. I highly recommend the track Venice. You can also keep up to date with the latest news on their website – photos, writings, videos and more!
Thanks, guys, for answering my questions!
