The Synopsis
In an episode directed by Emmy Award winner Joss Whedon, Mr. Schuester’s former high school nemesis Bryan Ryan (guest star Neil Patrick Harris) causes trouble for the glee club. Meanwhile, Rachel struggles with a life-long personal issue, and Artie’s dreams take him on an adventure.
The Soundtrack
- Piano Man (Billy Joel)
- Dream On (Aerosmith)
- Safety Dance (Men Without Hats)
- I Dreamed a Dream (Les Miserables)
- Dream a Little Dream of Me (Mamas & Papas)
The Soundbites
- Don’t make that face. Global warming’s a theory.
- I have superhuman upper body strength from pushing my wheelchair.
- Can’t feed a child sheet music, Will. I mean, I guess you could, but he’d be dead in a month.
- Was Mandy Patinkin in on this?
- Do you want to see my research that my mother is Bernadette Peters?
- Glee club is not just about expressing yourself to everyone else; it’s about expressing yourself to yourself.
- The basement’s like a shrine . . . it’s creepy and flattering at the same time.
- I don’t know this man. His caretaker just stepped away.
- You’ve done your homework. / I’m an educator.
- Ever heard of anger sex? / The only kind I know.
- I’ve got a secret room upstairs – like Letterman.
- I’ve grown weary of your insults, Will. They sting, and they make me want to punch your face.
- Any of those guys in there could dance my part better than me … except Finn.
The Commentary
- Molly Shannon again? In another bit role? Did she win these appearances in an auction or something?
- I really like how they’re calling him Bryan Ryan.
- I am not a fan of Jessie. He actually said he came back to school to make all Rachel’s dreams come true. Blech.
- Rachel’s birthday is December 18. So is mine. I don’t know what that means, but it seems significant.
- Terri as Bryan’s one who got away – I saw it coming, but it still rocks.
- Awww, Artie! I dream of leading a flash mob, too!
- Love, love, LOVE the facts about how arts and sports improve the lives of students.
- Oh, how I hope there’s really a Jazz Hands Catalog.
- I’m glad Jessie and Rachel’s mom didn’t end up being totally rotten. Just a little sneaky.
I won’t lie. Mr. Schuester and Barney together? Dream. Come. True. (Yes, sorry, pun intended.) Also? I’m not to proud to tell you that I cannot wait for the Lady Gaga episode. What about you?

This episode was AWESOME and I may or may not be listening to “I Dreamed a Dream” as I type this. Also, flash mob? HELLO. Love it.
I don’t love Lady Gaga but I can’t help but admit I’m more than a bit curious.
Loved. This. Episode. This may rank as my favorite this season. NPH was perfect, and he and Mr. Schu’s “Dream On” was epic. And I do love the plot about Rachel’s mom. Despite the cheese, I did “aww” when Jesse told Rachel that her becoming a big star wasn’t a dream, it was an inevitability.
As for next week’s Lady Gaga episode, I am curious. I enjoy her music though I don’t get her. But the Madonna themed episode didn’t live up to the hype in my opinion.
I can’t wait for the Lady Gaga episode next week! My fave quote was Do you want to see my research that my mother is Bernadette Peters? I just love Rachel! And my favorite scene was Artie dancing…I love him!
