The life of cohabitating caused Derek some annoyance as Meredith and Christina spent a good chunk of an evening gabbing on the phone as they were reading Mer’s “Dead Mommy’s Journals”. Depriving a neurosurgeon of sleep – doesn’t seem like a bright idea.
To make up for last week’s pig surgery, this week the docs were introduced to STAN, a mechanical robot/doll to practice with, as the residents would now be in competition to determine to do the first solo surgery. George was left to work with Stan, while Meredith and Izzie were paired with Hahn for the day. Hahn’s patient? The guy who didn’t get the heart when Izzie stole it for Denny (And, I think, the dad from the show “American Dreams” – Jack Pryor? Was that you?). This brought up so many memories for Izzie and she was seeing Denny everywhere (nice to see ya, Denny).

Tired and in need of some relief from the girl talk, Derek asked Sloan to sleep with Christina. Sloan said no, but Derek used a little reverse psychology to goad Sloan into saying he’d give it a shot. That began a hilarious series of Sloan hitting on an oblivious Christina and getting shot down.
In her wandering around the hospital, Lexie stumbled across some of the younger docs in the basement practicing IVs on each other. They complained because Yang never lets them do anything, so they are practicing on each other. Later, in the morgue Lexie asked the technician what is done with the unclaimed bodies, and she’s told that sometimes they are used for medical students to do research and learn with. You can see the lightbulb go off in her head that they can practice on something other than each other.
Mer tells Hahn that Izzie has a history with the heart patient and with Denny. Callie later told Erica the history of Denny, the LVAD wire, the heart. Hahn was furious and stormed into the Chief’s office. Despite her yelling, the Chief told her it was a closed issue – that it had been dealt with, and was not open for discussion.
Bailey and Derek were doing brain surgery on an elderly woman and were struck by the awesome love between the woman and her husband. Mrs. Bullard’s tumor was hemorrhaging and the surgery was necessary but risky. Mrs. Bullard made it through surgery but unfortunately didn’t fare so well afterwards. The doctors tried valiantly to save the woman, so inspired by the love that the couple shared.
Annoyed with the docs for fighting over patients and their seemingly callous nature about the patients, Hunt kicked Yang and Karev out of a treatment room. He said to her later, “Do you even know the patient’s name?” Criticizing her, not for her medical skills, but essentially for her bad bedside manner. Christina then shut the door and explained to him that she became a doctor after a car accident with her father, holding his chest closed to keep the blood in, and feeling the moment his heart stopped beating. It was awesome to see a side of Christina that wasn’t as Sloan said: “She is a bad cheap wine that gives you a headache you can feel in your teeth.” (By the way? That was the BEST LINE OF THE NIGHT).
Outside SGH, Erica and Callie talked. Hahn told Callie that she had talked to the chief and that she was going to report the Denny incident to UNOS. Callie was outraged, saying that Izzie was one of “their doctors” (And seeing as Callie doesn’t even LIKE Izzie, that’s huge), and that Hahn shouldn’t do it. They fought, and Erica got into her car and drove away. What wasn’t said, and I’m curious to see next week is how they explain Hahn’s absence – as she has been dismissed from Grey’s and won’t be in future episodes. Goodbye Hahn.
What do you think of last night’s episode? How are you feeling about Doctor Hunt? And the dismissal of Hahn?
