At the beginning of last night’s episode, only four designers were left standing: Jerrell, Leanne, Kenly and Korto.
After sending the losing model on her way, Heidi sent the designers to the lobby to meet Tim Gunn in the lobby for a field trip. Tim and the designers boarded a van to their final destination. Where did they go? The New York Botanical Garden.
The designers arrived to the familiar face of Collier Strong from L’Oreal Paris (how’s that, product placement?) to reveal the challenge: Create an evening gown using nature as their muse. Given digital cameras and an hour to explore the garden seeking inspiration, the designers were sent on their way to discover the Garden before they would return to Parsons.
Jerrell was drawn towards a beautiful multi-colored cluster of lush roses. Leanne, when not shooing the bees away, found a grouping of delicate lavender flowers with a fabulous petal shape. Reminded of her mother’s gardens in Africa, Korto focused on an orange and yellow textured flamenco flower. Kenly, enthused by the challenge because of her love of bright colors, snapped a picture of pinkish-purple textured leaves.
After thirty minutes at Parsons to select a photograph, the designers went to Mood. As far as trips to Mood go, it was pretty low key. The designers were excited about their fabric selections and choices. As they were leaving, it was shown that someone left a pile of stuff on the counter at Mood. Uh oh, right? Love that foreshadowing, because given the tension and focus on the rift between Kenly and the other designers, I knew before Kenly said, “Did I have another bag from Mood?” that it was going to be her tulle not making it back to Parsons.
Interestingly enough, Jerrell and Korto both had tulle to spare. Would they share with Kenly? No. Given her attitude, the other designers didn’t have any desire to help her out. Lucky for Kenly, Tim Gunn told her that if she’s paid for the tulle and it’s on her receipt, she could go back to Mood to pick it up. Saved by Tim. Yeah, that same Tim she was giving drama to on the last challenge.
The designers took a break from the designing (and oh my gosh! Who would have thought they would struggle so much on an EVENING GOWN challenge?) to talk make up with Collier Strong. Tim then rounded the workroom to look at the designs and talk to the designers. Korto said her design was bothering her, and Tim agreed and they discussed some details. Kenley was thrilled to hear Tim thought her dress looked like it had fish scales (the challenge wasn’t about fish, Kenley!). Tim responded positively to the layers of Jerrell’s look but felt it looked unfinished. Tim thought perhaps Leanne’s dress was a bit “Hello Dolly!” from the waist down (that ain’t good).
On the Runway, the judges for this challenge were Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors and Georgina Chapman of Marchesa. After the looks sashayed down the runway, the judges spoke to the designers. Georgina liked the balance between sculptural and soft in Leanne’s garment. Nina was pleasantly surprised but concerned with the bustle, which Michael Kors agreed was distracting. Michael Kors felt Korto’s dress was beautifully made, that it was a very flattering dress but not very sophisticated. On the runway, Korto was distraught with tears streaming down her face. The judges felt that Jerrell’s dress was the most youthful of the group, though Michael and Nina both expressed concern about his finishing. The judges felt Kenly’s dress was more reptilian than organic.
Once again, Kenly let her attitude loose on the runway but this time the judges called her on it. Before sending the designers back stage, Heidi asked each of the designers why they felt they should be the one to go to Bryant Park and which two designers would they choose to go with them. Surprise – no one chose Kenly (but Kenly), and that made her dissolve into tears with a sob story about having to fight her way through life and how she developed a hard exterior because of it. Memo to Kenly: Have you heard the phrase “too little too late”? It applies here, dear.
The designers safely back stage bickering, the judges discussed the outfits. They liked Leanne’s outfit and her softer side. Jerrell’s was also a hit (minus his finish issues). Korto’s was a cliché. Kenly displayed a total loss of taste and by the way, can you imagine a buyer criticizing the design of an outfit and Kenly stabbing him? (Ouch).
Back on the runway, Jerrell was declared the winner – and Kenly and Korto had the lowest scores. Jerrell won so he was safe (and so emotional!), however, the judges couldn’t decide on a loser so here is where it got yucky: They will now all design for Bryant Park, and upon their return to New York, one of them would be auf’d. No air kiss of death last night, but a lot of not so fabulous design and a lame ending.
What did you think? Who is your pick for Bryant Park?

Have you heard the phrase, too little too late… perfect! I love it when they leave stuff behind.. it just foreshadows how my kids are going to be when they get out in the real world.
Do you have your tulle.. I mean lunch?
Great recap.. I like it better than the show.
I’m with you on this one. Last night’s show was a dissapointment. Big time. But I have to agree with the judges’ decision to keep all 4 for the time being. I didn’t think anyone shined enough to auff anyone else.
And Miss Kenley, as much as I ADORE your mid-century modern fashion sense (and I really, really do. Right down to your feathers & head bands), you’d better reign that ‘tude in a bit or you’re likely to get beat down in a dark corner by your competition…or Mr.Gunn.
FW, that’s a good point. I guess without knowing all the back story, by garment alone it would be difficult for the judges to entirely pick a “loser” – but i’m sorry, Kenley’s fish scale dress? Eeesh. It wasn’t very botanical – I really didn’t love it. I have liked her quite a bit to this point, but her attitude does ugly it up for me.
I am looking or a screenshot or JPG or SOMETHING of Korto Momolu’s flamenco flower inspiration picture. Help!
Thanks so much!
