It’s transformation month here at Blissfully Domestic, and what better way to celebrate than taking in a movie that involves an amazing transformation or makeover.
13 Going on 30
Starring: Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo
Jenna is a braces-wearing middle school nerd who longs to be popular. When she invites the popular “six chicks” to her 13th birthday party, she is surprised when they show up. During a game of seven minutes in heaven, Jenna’s friend Matt reveals that her “friends” have ditched the party. This prompts Jenna to lock herself in the closet and wish to be older and more popular. In a stunning transformation, she wakes up as a thirty-year-old editor for a fashion magazine. And while her popularity and success is apparent, it’s also revealed that Jenna has isolated herself from her family and any true friends from her past, including Matt. But when Jenna tracks down her old friend, she realizes that their friendship is the most important thing in her life. But is it already too late?
Miss Congeniality
Starring: Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine
FBI agent Grace Heart is anything but ladylike. But when a person who calls himself the Citizen threatens to attack the Miss USA pageant, Grace must go undercover as the contestant from New Jersey. In one night, pageant consultant Victor turns Grace from a slob to a knockout, but the full transformation takes much longer. Despite a number of slip-ups and hilarious antics, Grace becomes more comfortable with displaying her femininity, all while realizing the importance of being yourself and occasionally throwing the rule book out the window.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Starring: Nia Vardalos and John Corbett
Toula’s life is all planned out. She is part of a Greek family, so she must marry a Greek man, have Greek kids, and send them to Greek school. The only problem? She is bored with her life as a waitress and wants more for herself. After meeting Ian in her family’s restaurant, she decides to transform her life, ditching her frumpy clothes, glasses and hair for a more stylish look. She also begins attending night classes, and convinces her parents to let her work in her aunt’s travel agency. One day while working in the agency, Ian stops by, having noticed her through the window. And while a romance starts up between the two, Toula realizes that she can’t hide her loud family for long. Suddenly she must convince her family that Ian is right for her. But even more importantly, she must find peace with her heritage and accept that it is a part of her.
My Fair Lady
Starring: Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison
This classic film pairs Professor Henry Higgins, a speech expert, with the hilarious low class Elize Doolitte. Higgins bets his friend that he can turn the phonetically challenged woman into a high class stunner, simply by giving her speech lessons. But when Eliza is put in a beautiful dress for an event that goes off without a hitch, Higgins realizes he’s starting to fall for her. But when she finds out about the bet, and receives a proposal from another man, will she leave Higgins behind?
Never Been Kissed
Starring: Drew Barrymore, Michael Vartan and David Arquette
Josie Gellar is a plain jane grammar freak that works for a local newspaper. When she is given the chance to take on her first reporting assignment, she must go to the one place she never wanted to experience again: high school. Josie’s over-the-top outfits, strange behavior and the horrible memories of her previous high school life as “Josie Grossy” nearly end her undercover assignment, until she gets help from her brother Rob. The two manage to infiltrate the popular crowd, and Josie’s transformation catches the eye of the most popular guy in school and her English teacher, Mr. Coulson. But when Josie sees her new popular friends mistreating a girl she has come to like, she realizes that she can’t be someone she’s not.
Pretty Woman
Starring: Julia Roberts and Richard Gere
Vivian Ward is a down-on-her-luck prostitute who happens to catch the eye of businessman Edward. After one night together, Edward asks Vivian to act as his escort while he’s in town, providing her with a makeover to ensure that she fits in with his high-society friends. While Edward convinces himself that their relationship is strictly business, he begins to feel otherwise when one of his associates makes a pass at her.
She’s All That
Starring: Rachel Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr.
Would any makeover list be complete without this teen classic? Laney (Cook) is the classic nerd in high school; she immerses herself in art class and is essentially ignored by all of her peers. Zack (Prinze Jr.) is one of the most popular atheletes in school. But when Zack makes a bet with his friend Dean that he can turn a nerd into the prom queen, he decides to make Laney his experiment. But when Laney comes down the stairs with a new haircut and a stunning red dress, Zack realizes all bets are off. Suddenly the two find out they have more in common than they ever realized. And when Laney finds out the truth about the bet, Zack must convince her than the real transformation has taken place in his heart; he loves her for who she is, not for what she looks like.
