I’m guilty of it. I often use LOL when I’m not really laughing. Heck, I’ve used it when a smile just barely grazed my face. Why? Was it the ‘expected’ reaction? Was I afraid of hurting someone’s feelings because obviously THEY think they are funny and hope I do too?
Or did I use LOL because there simply was no alternative? And how did I feel after misrepresenting myself with LOL? Like a dirty little liar that’s how.
Enter QCTM, or Quietly Chuckling to Myself. QCTM (a group with 587 members strong on Facebook) is a movement to live honestly . If you aren’t really laughing out loud, then don’t use LOL. More often than not, you are chuckling to yourself and so be honest! Think of it as a cleansing of your soul. Take the pledge to LOL no longer…unless you really are LOL. As the QCTM folks say, “Join the fight against fake laughter!”

What a neat idea! I use “LOL” all the time and I’m very rarely actually laughing out loud.
