I need more TV shows to watch like I need another sprinkle-covered Christmas cookie. But over the next few weeks, every station on the dial (as if we still have dials?!) will debut new shows in just about every genre and time slot.
Considering I literally had to create a spreadsheet to figure out how I was going to find time for all my favorite shows this fall, I really should just look the other way. But it’s so hard! (Yes, please do imagine that said in my most whiny voice.)
The networks aren’t stupid, and while we’ve been enduring holiday specials and reruns for the past month, they’ve been running one slick commercial after another. I don’t know the details of every new show, but the ones that have been promoted (nonstop in some cases!) look pretty good for the most part! Here’s what I’ll be trying out – and possibly adding to my regular viewing schedule!
Off the Map (ABC, January 12): Unusually attractive doctors perform miracles and engage in overly dramatic relationships in the South American jungle. Okay, so that’s not exactly the official description, but come on. It’s made by the same people who created Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. I know what kind of show this will be. And I am powerless to resist it.
Of course, for me, it doesn’t hurt one bit that it stars Enrique Murciano. That’s all I’m saying about THAT.
Mr. Sunshine (ABC, February 9): This show may be awful. But tell me that it has Matthew Perry (recently of the uneven, but still awesome Studio 60) and Andrea Anders (recently of the hilarious, though under-appreciated Better Off Ted), and I’m hooked. I’ll give it a fair shot, at the least.
Mad Love (CBS, February 21): What if you met the man of your dreams, but your friends hated him? That’s the basic premise of this comedy starring – among others, obviously – Judy Greer. Again, it may not be a keeper, but I’m looking forward to watching the pilot.
Chaos (CBS, April 1): Rogue spies stop crime, need we say more? Actually, I don’t know much more about this show, but I’m a sucker for spies. So, I’m in. I think.
Breaking In (Fox, April 6): When I was in middle school, I had a crush on Christian Slater. Which seems kind of weird now, because I don’t even think he’s cute. Even weirder? The fact that I’ll apparently give any TV show he’s in a chance. Exhibit A: My Own Worst Enemy. (Didn’t see it? No. Not many people did.) Exhibit B: Breaking In, a new workplace comedy about a security firm.
Clearly, I have weird reasons for watching what I watch. But what about you? What new shows look good to you? Which ones will you watch this winter?

I create a spreadsheet every fall to see what shows I can and can’t watch. I totally understand!
I don’t normally start shows in the Spring, but I guess I should check them out.
