If you have male (or males in my case), then you are often left scratching your head while they are scratching…well anything but their heads! Boys are their own entities with the superpower ability to turn any inanimate object into their very own weapon of choice. But the males of today’s society are quickly changing and sadly, changing for the worse.

Dr. Meg Meeker believes that boys are meant to be adventurous, high-spirited and even rambunctious. In her new book Boys Should Be Boys, she addresses the things that we, as parents, can do to help our sons mature into healthy and confident men. Meeker discusses the seven secrets that, through her practice as a pediatrician and mother, will assist us in raising healthy sons. These include:
* Why the most important factor in shaping your son’s behavior isn’t “peer pressure” (it’s you.)
* How to preserve your son’s innocence (and why it’s essential to help him grow up.)
* Why boys need less, not more–whether it’s computer games, organized sports, or lessons.
* How to talk to your son–the pitfalls that moms and dads face.
* Why it’s not normal for teenage boys to be moody and rebellious
* Why teaching your son about virtue isn’t an option, it’s a necessity
I found this book to be truthful, honest and full of practical and easy to use tips to help me make sure I get it right! Believe me, I have a lot of pages marked for quick reference. I have even convinced my non-reading husband to read it, or at least all the parts I highlighted!! I think one of my favorite parts sums up the book perfectly, “You can raise a superstar who plays four years of varsity sports ….. but if he doesn’t value himself or others, or is selfish… he will be miserable.”
And that, in my mind, are words to parent by.
And of course, don’t forget you can catch up with Kat and the chaos that is boys over at the Sassy Irish Lassie!
