Digital cameras are wonderful! But they can be so complicated and intimidating that you don’t use them as much as you could and the pictures you take are not the quality they should be. Here are some tips to help you take better ones.
Hold the camera still when the shutter releases. Use a tripod if you are too shaky or use the timer.
Focus on the center of attention. Lock in the center of focus before pressing the button all the way. Reread your instructions on the area of focus if you are unsure of where your camera’s focus area is.
Use a plain background. Complicated patterns in the background distract and confuse the viewing eye.
Move in closer. Fill up the viewfinder with your object. Don’t crop after you take the picture, learn to get in closer and crop visually before you snap it.
Get down to eye level with your subject. It makes all the difference when trying to capture the essence of a personality.
These are just a few simple things but if you try them you will find they can really produce a great picture. Sometimes it is just adjusting the little things that give you the great results. One of the best things about digital cameras is that you can take so many pictures in your search for the perfect photo and just delete the duds. So practice, practice, practice!

A trick I’ve been using for years with film AND digital cameras to help with #1 is, right before I press the shutter, I hold my breath. It really helps!
Fabulous tips. Thank you. I really do need to unpack my tripod from its box and start using it.
