I’m learning a lot of technical aspects of photography as I go along… but much of what ends up in my photos starts as a result of my experimenting. I strongly encourage you to play with your camera.

A good place so start is with the flash.

Take this photo.

I accidentally used the flash when I took it. The result is you can see the skinny tree in the foreground. Compare that with this shot (the very next shot I took) when I did NOT use the flash.

Now look at these two photos.

The difference is subtle, but do you notice how in Photo 2 the blues in the sky and in the water are, well, bluer? For this I used a feature on my camera called “vivid,” which makes the color “pop” a little more.

As in the first shot two photos, I’m not sure which I like better, but it’s so nice to have the option to “play” with various effects, right on the camera. The cool thing about digital is that you have virtually limitless opportunity to play to your heart’s content.
