Taking photographs of young children can be challenging. They move a lot, can be hard to bargain with, and often could not care less about what you’re trying to achieve. Don’t worry, you can still get great photos of little kids, I promise. This article will give you some tips that, when practiced regularly, will result in fantastic photographs of young children.
Take Advantage of Light
- Ask your young one, “Where is the light? Can you see it? What color is it?” etc. When he turns his face to the light, his eyes will pop (learn more about catch lights here) .
- Find the places and times of day in your house when natural light streams in through a window. Use that – if your child is playing/eating near one, it’s time to grab your camera and get some well-lit, candid shots.
- Always have your camera with you during outdoor adventures. Best light, beautiful shots.
Take Advantage of Bath Time
- They might be able to move around, but they can’t run away.
- Props are usually colorful and fun.
- Water is beautiful.
Take Advantage of When They’re Not Looking
Photographs of children doing their own thing are special.
Take Advantage of Special Moments with Loved Ones
The love between them can elicit real emotion and make a photo truly moving.
Take Advantage of Action
Don’t be afraid to take action shots; they can tell the true story of what a young child is really like.

I love these shots. I actually find it much easier to get shots of my 4 year old than my 7 year old — because my four year old can lose herself in the moment and forget I’m there — the seven year old doesn’t!
