You see it at professional studios all the time. They take a black and white picture and just add a touch of color somewhere. Since I have yet to tackle Photoshop, I found a way on Picnik.com to do this yourself, for FREE in just a few minutes.
After you have selected the picture you want and uploaded to Picnik and opened it for editing. Oh yea and it needs to be a color picture.
Click on the “Create” tab. On the left will be a lot of different options for you. Click on the “Black & White” option and your picture will become all black and white. ![]()
Next click on the brush icon on the left.
Then depending on the area you want to be in color, select your brush size.
In this example I am going to color in the squares in the card that my daughter is holding.
Click on the area you want “colorized.” You can make the brush bigger and smaller to get all the corners. You can also use the zoom on the bottom right to really get those smaller areas. Once you have clicked on all the area you want in color, head back to the Black & White column on the left and click “Apply”. You can save the image to your Flickr account, computer, facebook and even more places.

I know of two easy ways to do this in PhotoShop.
1. Use the magic wand to select the color you want retained. (Hold down the shift key to select multiple areas if needed.) Adjust brightness/contrast/hue saturation if desired. Select Inverse from the Select menu. Then go to Image/Adjustments/Desaturate. Adjust brightness and contrast of the black and white areas if needed.
2. Duplicate the layer. Desaturate the new (top) layer. Use the eraser tool to carefully erase the areas you want colorized. Adjust the size of the ‘eraser’ as needed. Merge layers.
Thanks so much for the link and tips. I love picnik, I have been wanting to buy some software but didn’t want to pay a fortune to do the stuff I wanted to do. now I don’t have to. Thanks again for the great find!!!
