If you know nothing about your new camera, and have never ever moved away from the green square mode (auto) I am going to give you one tip that will help you take better photos immediately. What’s the tip? Glad you asked.
First lets look at a photo I took at an insanely eclectic Italian restaurant interior. You can see a place like this was screaming to have its photo taken.
But for some reason the photo doesn’t capture the ‘mood’ of the place. It just looks junked up and nothing special. And then I did IT. The one trick that has saved a million photos.
Ready for it? TURN OFF the FLASH. Now the only thing tricky about turning off the flash, when you camera’s sensors say you need one, is that you have to stand very, very still. Best to brace yourself (I find an 8 year old boy works great as a place to steady my camera even)… so very carefully, hold still and… click!
You get this photo instead…which really captures the ‘essence’ and ‘ambience’ of this kooky place.
Now run along, and learn how to turn off your flash. You’ll thank me later….

Gah, I try and try to take pics w/o flash and they are almost always blurry. Guess I don’t have a very steady hand. It does make such a big difference though. Another tip I learned is to put a finger partially over the flashbulb. You still have a flash, but your finger cuts the harshness of the light a bit.
Or you could just learn how to use your flash correctly. Something which I have spent the last year trying to do and still not totally there in dark spaces, but for controlled environments I got it down.
Seems a but foolish just to say, ‘hey just turn it off’ sure you can get some nice shots that way, but you could make them even better with it on!
I find that I have MUCH more luck NOT using the flash than using it. Avangelist is right; there are things you can do to use the flash to better effect. But by and large, I prefer not using it.
Hey Avangelist, I totally agree…if given the option to work the controls of your flash (for instance on a SLR camera flash) that is preferred. Lots of people don’t realize you can ‘turn down’ your flash! BUT on nearly ALL point and shoot camera’s it is either ON or OFF. No option to manipulate.
So in that case, I simply wanted to remind people to try their photos with out the flash!
