Not with a gun, silly; with my camera!
While I love to take pictures of my kids, my friends’ kids, nature, old barns, interesting finds, and much, much more, I really love to shoot pictures of strangers.
“You don’t take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.”
—author unknown
I remember reading this quote, one time, and isn’t it the truth?
A photograph captures a moment in time that enables [you] to look back, remember, and relate. Because sometimes there just aren’t any words. Sometimes there’s only succinct and clear moment depicted. And a stranger can help you mold that moment.
An unknown person can help you capture so much more than what’s in the backdrop.
What was she thinking? Where were they rushing off to? What was he pondering? Why did he wear that shirt?
There are all situations that you have been in, and with the help fellow mankind you can recount those fleeting moments!
“My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.”
—Richard Avedon
There will definitely be times where you need to ask permission. And we as photographers should not be afraid to do so. More often than not people will oblige you a portrait. There’s something about asking, though. Not only is it the right thing to do, it simply exudes professionalism and class.

Lovely post!!
I love shooting strangers, too, but I am always nervous. That’s what a good telephoto is good for!
I shoot with a 50mm f/1.4 so I am usually asking. LOL
Great post, Mishi! I don’t shoot strangers yet. I want to, but I haven’t found my voice. I will though…I will.
Great photos!
If only taking pictures of strangers is allowed in Dubai!! I almost lost my camera when a police asked me what I was doing when taking photos of children (not mine) on the beach!
