Oh, how I love silhouettes! They exhibit an artistic quality that always draws my eye in to them. When you take a silhouette you can capture interesting cityscape, or a person looking out at a landscape , or a family walking on the beach at sunset; the possibilities are endless.
A silhouette is when you have a dark outline of a subject with a lighter background. To achieve this you need a light source behind your subject. My favorite light source is the sun, at sunrise or at sunset. And since I’m not that much of a morning person I prefer to take silhouettes at sunset!
Tips and Tricks for taking your own Silhouettes:
- Use the sun as a light source. Best time being at sunset!
- Use a high aperture so that the whole shot is in focus.
- For point-and-shoot cameras do not focus on the subject, rather try focusing on the lightest part of the scene as to not let the camera compensate for the lower light condition.
- Try, try, and try again!
