I’ve developed quite a love of photographing flowers. Over the last year, I’ve taken thousands of photos of flowers. Here are two tips to get you started.
Get CLOSE.
Closeups are my FAVORITE, and I think it’s the best way to photograph flowers.
You DON’T need to use a macro lens to photograph flowers. I use my plain old lens.
However, using the macro setting (generally indicated by the photo of a flower, strangely enough) will allow you to get closer than you might think possible.
If you have a DSLR (or a plain “old” SLR), experiment to see how close you can get. Also consider using manual focus instead of auto focus. My results have improved immeasurably since I started using manual focus.
Change the perspective.
I enjoy looking for unusual angles. Photograph flowers from way down low.
One of my favorite things to do these days is photograph a flower with the light shining through it.
The possibilities are endless!
As always, experiment and have fun. Let us know what tips you have for photographing flowers.

This has become a new passion of mine as well. I found that if you take a spray bottle of water and lightly mist the flower you are wanting to shoot – it makes for a great shot, esp. if you can get the sun to bounce off of the droplett. Thanks for posting this. You have some beautiful photos!
That daisy photo is gorgeous!!
Thanks for the tips. I can’t want for spring again so I can use some of the tips you shared.
