The bond between a mother and a child is extraordinary. That’s why portraits of a mother and her newborn baby are so special. As a photographer I want to capture the radiant beauty and serenity of the newly formed mother-child bond. It is easy to accomplish.
Create Memories
I never had professional portraits taken of myself with my infant children. And that is something that I truly regret. That’s why I love to document this beautiful and precious time for new moms.
When you take portraits of moms and babies you are not only taking pictures, you are creating memories. You are recording a special time in a baby’s life, a time that goes by all too quickly.
“Mommy and Me” Photography
- Capture peaceful moments between mother and baby, like just after a feeding or a simple soothing moment of love during the photo-shoot. The mother will be able to look back on these types of photos and cherish the quiet times that are so often forgotten.
- Get in close and fill the whole frame with mother and baby’s faces, document a simple kiss or a loving cheek-to-cheek nuzzle.
- Use a lens like the 50mm f/1.4 to achieve a shallow depth of field with the focus on the baby (his face, hands, or feet) and the mom in the background lovingly looking at her precious gift.
- Try to document the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Photographing a feeding, a diaper change, or a gentle baby bath will provide the mother with a record of days and events that pass too quickly.
- Take your time and just shoot natural portraits of this special time. Remember the baby may not cooperate so be sure to allow for that. Creating a relaxed atmosphere will definitely yield some wonderful images.
