Wallpaper is making a comeback in home decor. You will see the top designers using it today. Wallaper is being used to add a statement to an accent wall, and to add personality and beauty to any home. It’s not difficult to learn how to hang wallpaper, but there are a few tips and techniques that will help make the transition from a blank wall to a beautifully wallpapered one a bit easier for you. Follow these tips and techniques for hanging your own wallpaper.
Nine easy tips and techniques to hang your own wallpaper
1) Prime the surface – this is a key element to hanging wallpaper that many people either overlook or simply skip thinking that they’ll get right to the project. Priming the wall surface will actually ensure that the adhesive will take a bit longer to dry, giving you more time to perfectly position your wallpaper right where you want it.
2) Determine how much wallpaper you need for your project – measure the height of the wall (not including the baseboard or crown molding, if any). Measure the length of each wall. Figure the number of square feet by multiplying the height of the wall by the total number of square feet you need to cover the wall surface.
3) Mark the walls – lay out your planned design and mark the walls using a level and pencil. This step will help you see at a glance where to place the edges of your paper.
4)Cut your pieces – cut the number of strips or pieces of wallpaper you’re going to need to cover your wall surface.
5) Prep or Relax the Wallpaper – apply the paste or paste activator to the back of the piece of wallpaper. Match up the ends and corners of the paper and allow it to sit for about 3 to 5 minutes. The paper will actually expand during this time, allowing for a more accurate fit once it is on the wall.
6) Begin to hang the wallpaper – beginning at the top of the wall and in a corner, unfold the relaxed paper (with adhesive already applied) and align the top along the ceiling or crown molding with a bit of overhang. This way you can trim it exactly along the edge, making the job look professional. Continue this procedure around the entire room.
7) Smooth the wallpaper – smooth the edges of the paper with a moist sponge first and then gently, ever so lightly but firmly, smooth the paper with a smoother. This step will, hopefully, remove any wrinkles and adhere the paper to the prepared wall.
Trim excess paper – place a putty knife along the edge of the ceiling where you want to trim the excess paper. Slowly trim the excess with a sharp knife, moving the putty knife across the paper at the same time so that the wallpaper doesn’t shift.
9) Wipe up any drips from the baseboards or floor.
Once you have seen how to hang wallpaper, you’ll probably find that it is a relatively simple do-it-yourself project.
