HGTV’s 25 Decorating Mistakes

Did you happen to catch
this HGTV special recently?
Evidently there are 25 Decorating Mistakes that we
absolutely should not
do. Oh, the horror of it all! I was holding my breath, hoping against hope,
that I had not ever committed the decorating sins that I was about to behold. Can you hear the sarcasm here? OK, so I
did commit a few of them… let’s see if YOU
are off the hook!
- Fake flowers and plants (I confess, I have both in my home at the moment, although not nearly as many as I used to.)
- Too many pillows, on the bed or sofa (yes, I’m guilty of this one too)
- Knick-knack overload (have plenty of these, but not as much as a granny would)
- Fear of color (apparently, this is not one of my problems)
- Ignoring windows (not a problem for me either)
- Pushed back furniture (don’t do this for the most part, if there’s room to float, I do it)
- Tacky couch covers (they were talking clear plastic, can you imagine? does anyone do that anymore? I never see it in the South)
- Frames too high (this is a pet peeve of mine too)
- Improper lighting (I think I have this one covered just fine)
- Floating rugs (nope, not a problem either)
- Too many colors/patterns (love color & patterns, but I think I’m under control)
- Furniture that doesn’t fit (I think they mean oversized & too much in one room)
- Following fads (I have been a wee bit guilty of following some fads, but only the good ones)
- Everything matches (this seemed to be too much of one color in a room, everything the same color).
- Lack of traffic flow (not good for directing foot traffic in a room, I’m OK with this one)
- Uncomfortable dining room chairs (mine are upholstered & completely comfortable)
- Too formal (nope, I’m not that formal in any room)
- Keeping something you hate (nope, I will not have anything out that I hate)
- Lopsided furnishings (this is balance in a room, not having too much on any one side)
- Outdated accessories (don’t think I have too many of those, but my mother sure does)
- Themes (I’m not much for themes either)
- Undressed cables (hidden for the most part, I did just tack down the white satellite cable in our bedroom with white tacks next to the white baseboard..much better).
- Ignoring the foyer (oh, I love my foyer & would never ignore it)
- Too many family photos (have a few in the livingroom, but not overload)
- Toilet rugs (I gave up the contoured toilet rugs long
ago, but I was just called on something similar in my master bathroom post…I have one of those toilet seat covers, yes on all 3 commodes… call me tacky, but I like them, this is not a hotel). Fess up… who has a toilet rug OR toilet seat cover? I want to hear from all of you!
OK, true confession time. How many of
these have YOU committed? Let’s talk about this!

I have a toilet rug. I didn’t realize that was a faux paus! Everyone I know has one, and that darn tile floor is cold under your feet! I think if it’s clean and matches, it’s okay. I wouldn’t have a toilet seat cover though, unless I had to.
Until I am wealthy enough to have fresh flowers in my house every day, I refuse to give up my silk and dried flowers. I am willing to admit there are A LOT of really bad ones out there but I think there are nice ones too. They bring in some color and make me happy so I guess I don’t care what HGTV says.
I totally have the toilet rug & toilet cover. I need something cushy for my feet! I like them! And I make sure they are cleaned regularly
OY! I hope that these are not punishable offences. I think I have broken 6,8 & 24.
There is no way I am giving up my contoured toilet rugs! Not gonna do it. I need something to cover the cold tile and rest my bare feet upon during middle of the night potty trips. I tried using a regular rug but it just wouldn’t stay in place.
And my uncomfortable formal dining room chairs are perfect for getting the meal over with faster when my in-laws are visiting.
Oh dear – I have some work to do. I have committed a few of these. I have some artificial plants, uncomfortable dining room chairs, floating rugs, and some others.
I better go – gotta lot to do!
I failed on the family photos! If done tastefully they look amazing. There is nothing I enjoy more than looking at great memories of the people I love. Makes a home feel like a home too.
I don’t have the toilet rug, but I do have the toilet seat cover. It just seems too bare without it….
I don’t get the family photos thing. I mean, if you’re not trying to sell the house, I can’t see how it would make much of a difference.
Great post. Love it.
Now I need to go fix 10 things. LOL.
I’m sure I’ve violated the pushed-back furniture, but I have no choice. My house is only 1280 sq. feet. Tell me how to float furniture in rooms as small as mine!
*lol* Toilet seat covers!
When we went to the in-laws in the caribbean for the first time, THAT’s when I first saw toilet seat covers.. I never knew they existed and all I could think was: “ohh no….. germs!!!!!!”
greetings from the netherlands!
I am pretty POSITIVE that I have committed just about all of these offenses at least once, maybe twice
I do keep fake greenery in my house and flowers, too, but only if they are pretty and I keep it oh so minimal.
I have lived in homes that had small rooms, so yeah, traffic had been a problem in those homes, always a challenge.
Improper Lighting? Oh yea! I’m married to an electrician, so do you think anything electrical gets done around my house? haha
I remember watching this show, on the edge of my seat and then posting it on my facebook page, as if it were gospel
Great post, Rhoda
Bella
PS: I know you don’t really have toilet seat covers, do you??? lololol;) That’s ok, I still love you
I don’t know whether to laugh or be embarrassed! Heehee!!! I just found this blog today (directed by Nester) and was reading through the posts. Hi Rhoda, I’m the one (or maybe their were others too) that commented on your toilet seat cover. Although I tried to do it in a nice way and certainly hope I didn’t insinuate you were tacky! Just something I personally don’t like and I do think they look dated, but each of us has our own preferences. Anyhoo, after reading your post here, I’m sorry if my remark came across other than as I intended.

While I agree with the list one thing is missing: NO PERSONALITY. I hate when peoples homes look like a page from a catalog or show. It’s just not comfortable unless they add their personality to it: family photos, mementos, etc. I can’t get a good vibe so I can’t relax in those types of rooms.
I saw this show, too, Rhoda! I thought they were being a little picky about some things. I mean, too many family pictures? Who cares? If they make you happy, go for it. And some fake flowers are beautiful. I’ve got an arrangement I really love and always get compliments on. I’m not tossing it out–sorry, HGTV!

I am a professional designer and I have at least 6 of them covered! I am not a big fake plant person – But gosh can an arrangement really spice up an alcove or a dining room table! I’m sorry, there is no fresh flower market outside my door!
I forgive anyone who has a toilet rug! Warm up that cold tile!
fun blog! great topics!
Oh, the dreaded toilet rug – now I have to agree with that. And the plastic sofa cover. Great post!
HAHAHA. Everytime I walk into someone’s home and the furniture is up against all the walls I want to move it for them right then. Reminds me of my mother’s house. Growing up there was lots of room to dance to Montavoni records! HAHA. I do have some tall fake flowers from Pier 1 that I love so Oh well – I confess I did do the fake greenery on top of the cabinet thing in the 80′s. Thankfully, I have moved on from that. Fun post – thanks.
I have a toilet rug not because I like it but because between my husband and three-year-old nephew, there’s bound to be some, uh, spray now and again. I’d rather toss the rug in the wash than mop the floor.
We call those toilet lid rugs the “Toilet Toupee” and if you have the floor rugs, too, then it is the “Toilet Toupee Ensemble”.
I too, have fake flowers. My “dustables” have been downsized (not by choice but by space.
I would REALLY like to see HGTV try to come into my living room and arrange things better than we already have. These old houses weren’t built for today’s lifestyles and the furniture that goes with them. I’m sure they could buy different furniture, but then THEY have the money to do that!
Oh, and back to the “Toilet Toupee Ensemble”: I don’t have them. Grew up with 3 brothers and now have two mis-firing boys of my own. I will *never* have these pee-catchers in my house. How many times can you wash something before it falls apart or reeks? I do have a rug in front of the sink, and one that is put down for after showers, but nothing around the toilet. Eww!! Eww!! and Eww!
#1 for sure.
#14 in my bedroom. OY! Working on it tho.
I totally still have toilet rug/covers! I clean them all the time too… I am just to paranoid of germs to not have them.
Hi Rhoda,
Oh my where do I start….not giving up any of the things I love or do that makes me ME because HGTV says so. lol
I for one don’t use the toilet seat covers, but come the winter and out come the little rugs for our toes.
Silk flowers LOVE em…
Great post,
Kathy
Lets see…
#1. I have one fake tree (it’s leftover from a wedding decoration – don’t ask), but my cats eat whatever live plant I have in the house then throw up everywhere (I have one African violet and an aloe cactus both near my kitchen sink).
#4. I wouldn’t call it fear of color as much as fear of choosing the wrong color! Or fear of actually making a decision… but hey… isn’t beige in?!
#5. I know they’re there… I just can’t afford to cover ALL of them just yet. I’m working on it… slowly… we have a green belt out there though… so I’m not in a rush.
#9. I’m so guilty of this… I wish I had better lighting in so many areas of my home… but with two rambunctious toddlers… it’s a little scary to think about putting lamps where they can get ‘em. Ha.
#12. So not my fault… my husband bought these couches off of Craigslist… and I’ve been stuck with them ever since. Bleck.
#18. See #12.
#22. Still not certain how to handle the sound system cables dangling down from my corner TV nook that some idiot designed for over the fireplace. Bleck. I’d like to decide where I put my TV on my own, thank you very much.
7 out of 25… I guess I’m not as bad as I thought! Ha.
Hey, Tina, you didn’t offend me. I know we all have differing opinions on some of these things. Maybe it’s a Southern thing…who knows, maybe I’ll get rid of them one of these days.
Rhoda
I LOVE TOILET RUGS & SEAT COVERS! Yep, you heard me and I’m proud of it.
I think they are cute, and I hate HATE having cold feet when I use the toilet (it actually makes me feel ill).
Yes, I have toilet seat covers, but only in my bathroom. I didn’t put them in the boys’ bathroom or the public one because they were too hard to keep clean.
I am doing 1 and 12, though 12 will stop whenever we figure out a way to get the old sofa out of the room. Last time we carved it up with a chainsaw. But the one still in there is in decent shape, we just were given a better one.
There is some furniture I dislike in my house. My husband picked those pieces out. And there are two pieces he doesn’t like which I love… So I don’t think 19 should count against me.
You don’t have to have a fuzzy, germ harbouring toilet seat cover. You could use a Toilet Tattoo!
