This past weekend we performed our post-Thanksgiving ritual called “Husband bringing down the boxes from the attic. Wife and excited kids empty the boxes from the attic. Husband takes the empty boxes to the attic.” This is otherwise known as putting up the Christmas decorations and making room for the Christmas tree.
If you’re like me every Christmas is a struggle trying to figure where to put the massive collection of Christmas decor that you’ve collected over the years. But the worst part is finding room for the Christmas tree. Sure the first year you move into your new home is easy. You haven’t bought furniture for the living room yet, and the only thing in the living room is the tree. But now that your living room is finally finished, and that once empty corner or window dedicated to the tree is full. So what are you to do?
5 Steps for Making Room for the Christmas Tree

- Plan your space. Look around the room where you’d like to have your tree. Once you’ve picked your space look at it from all angles and make sure that the Christmas tree won’t block a walkway, a television, etc. Also, if you have a live tree make sure that you are far away from fireplaces or vents that could dry out the tree more quickly.
- Measure your space. Once you have picked a place in your room for your Christmas tree, be sure you should measure the width and heigth of that space and buy your fresh tree to fit. If you have a fake tree, does it fit? Do you need to find a new space or a new tree?
- Re-Arrange Furniture. Let’s say that your tree just doesn’t quite fit. Can you re-arrange the furniture? Can you move that chair just a couple of inches to the left or right to make it fit? Sometimes just slight changes to your room arrangement can make your space work.
- Relocate unnecessary furniture. If all else fails you can relocate furniture to another room if necessary. Be careful though. You may decide you like that moved piece better where you moved it to, and may end up needing to buy more furniture to fill that empty space where the Christmas tree once stood. I’m not saying that happened to me, but yeah, that happened to me.
- Take a picture and send it to me. I love Christmas tree decorating, and I am always looking for ways to decorate the three trees I have around my house. I’d love to see what you’ve done with your space!
