Gardens are such a beautiful addition to any home. When you come up to a house that is surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers it gives such a feeling of warm welcome. Most of us briefly daydream about how wonderful it would be to have such wonderful gardens around our own homes. But let’s face it-we are all busy women, and most of us don’t have the time and inclination to spend hours on the upkeep of a garden.
Never fear! In the next few weeks I’m going to highlight some lovely, easy care plants and some useful hard to kill herbs that can be easily incorporated around your own house.
I started out by talking about the herb Lovage in my last article, so now I’ll switch it up a little and talk about one of the nicest, easiest care landscaping plant I know-the Hosta.
Easy Perennials To Grow
Hostas are long lived perennials* that are grown for their lovely leaves. They come in solid green, dusky gray green, variegated white/green, yellow/green and many more. They do send up stalks with small white or purple flowers around mid summer, but trust me-they aren’t the main attraction. The real show is their gorgeous lush foliage. As a bonus, they grow in full sun to light shade, which makes them perfect for a wide range of locations.
Hostas are some of the easiest care plants you can get. The only thing I’ve ever had to do to mine was to rake off the dead leaves in the spring so the new growth could come up. They really are hardy, plant it and forget it type of plant!
Hostas make a lovely foundation planting along the base of your house. Their beautiful green foliage against the white of a porch is a classic look.
Easy To Share
They can also be a very frugal choice. Hostas are propagated by dividing. You can dig them up, split them in half with a sharp shovel, and replant. If you ask around you may find someone who is willing to share with you.

Hostas are great! I don’t even rake the dead stuff from the year before away and mine are huge. And they way I got them is a testament to their hardiness: my parents thought they had too many hostas, so they dug up a bunch of them, put them in plastic garbage bags, and drove them the 3+ hours to my house. They’ve been thriving for years.
I love hostas! I think they are so beautiful but I have always had the worst luck with them. I’ve planted them at least 3 different times and they haven’t done well at all. It must be me because I know plenty of people who have huge ones.
Sara, try growing them in big pots. Also watch out for slugs and snails who love them. Sluggo is a safe bait-killer. Be sure they get enough water.
I LOVE my Hosta plant! I don’t have a real garden, and my landlord won’t let me plant one. (Not that it would matter, our ground is so hard-packed!) So at the moment, it’s still fairly small and in my living room in a potter, but it’s growing fast! Easy cheesy, and very pretty!!
