Summer squash is one of those veggies that I always over plant. I don’t know why I do…I mean, it has to be the easiest thing to grow…put the seed in the ground, water, voila! Suddenly, there are vines and squash everywhere. I suppose I grow more squash to make up for the trauma of growing tomatoes…
This is a wonderful pic of the most recent squash harvest…plus, the 7 tomatoes I have harvested this season. Yes, they are cherry tomatoes…but I will take what I can get.
Summer Vegetable Recipes
There are all kinds of recipes and methods for cooking squash…for ideas, check Portland Foodie…
We have a love hate relationship with the squash…which makes me wonder if there is some deeper meaning to our ritual of over planting, harvesting in a panic, bagging it up and dropping it off on the door step of our neighbors…
Overplanting Yields Lots of Summer Squash
In the eagerness of spring, we reach for the things that we know will be successful…maybe we need that certain success to balance out the plants that don’t make it, the seeds that don’t germinate. Maybe we have a genuine respect for the sheer growth and production of this prickly vine…
Do you have thoughts about your summer squash? Tell me…I actually want to know….

Several years we’ve tried planting pumpkins for the kids. But I blame the squirrels and bunnies in our neighborhood. Usually we get a pumpkin started and find the vine severed. This year – not one pumpkin start. Oh well, I’ll pledge to try to grow them again.
I had no idea squash was so easy to grow. I may have to give this a try. I have had ZERO luck with any veggies this year in my garden. I have one green pepper and that’s it.
This was our first year planting a garden (if you don’t count the failed tomato pots from the last two years.) I wish my zucchini had germinated!
) I love squash, and I love to share what comes out of our garden. We had a good chard crop this year, and OK beans and yummy carrots. I’ve had one tomato so far, and the italian prunes on our tree are crunchy and tart still. But next year… patty pan squash is going in! Thanks for the reminder.
We love our zucchini! We always end up having our plants die early in the season. I don’t know why. But, we just started another planting of zucchini (but not our yellow straight neck squash), so I’m hoping they’ll take off and that we’ll have some more yummy zucchini bread and zucchini on the grill again!
I should try growing squash. My tomato growing this summer resulted in about 4 cherry tomatoes and then a dead plant.
I love zucchini. Someone gave me a pattypan squash and I didn’t know what to do with it! Guess I should figure those things out, huh?
It is easy to grow…just watch for mildew and squash vine borer…later this week, I will have a recipe for summer squash on my other blog http://www.portlandfoodie.com.
Glad I’ve inspired you all to grow it!
I definitely didn’t know it was so easy to grow.
Which squash is the one that you can boil, and then shred the inside into a substance resembling spaghetti noodles?
