According to the paper industry, Americans will consume an estimated 23 billion paper coffee cups this year. That’s a lot of paper! But these cups aren’t just paper or they could be recycled. Most are made of non-recycled bleached paper and have a plastic resin called polyethylene. This resin keeps the drink warm and keeps your cup from leaking but also makes it un-recyclable or biodegradable.
This doesn’t mea
n you have to give up your coffee. There are some great insulated mugs out there to help you keep a lot of trash out of the landfills.
A great option for coffee and other hot drinks on the go is the Klean Kanteen insulated bottle. It will keep your drinks hot for hours. They are also dishwasher safe so easy keep clean and ready to use!
Many of your favorite coffee shops offer discounts for bringing your own mug. It may take a bit to get in the habit of bring your own mug but once you do you will be glad you did!

Does Starbucks, McDonald’s, etc. give a discount for bringing your own mug like so many stores do for BYOB?
I’ve gotten a discount a starbucks, and argo tea gives discounts too. I tried using a reusable mug at a McDonald’s in Chicago and they wouldn’t use it because it’s “unsanitary” even if my mug was clean.
I have the 12 oz for coffee and the 20 oz to carry milk to refill my daughter’s Klean Kanteen when we’re out and about. I absolutely adore our Klean Kanteens. The single wall versions are great for the dishwasher. But, my insulated bottles came with info saying it was better to hand wash them…same for the stainless caps. So, in the sink they go…no worries, still the best bottles on the market, IMO.
Johanna: As Belinda said Starbucks does give you a discount.
Belinda: I don’t go to McDonald’s so I haven’t tried but that is to bad.
Venia: You are right! Oops lol. I have been putting mine in the dishwasher. The website says- “We recommend handwashing colored bottles and Insulated bottles.”
I must have read the wrong thing when I got mine. They are still super easy to clean.
