Have you ever broken a piece of glass in a picture frame? Or picked up a great frame at a garage sale that was missing the glass?
That has certainly happened to me plenty. I used to think that the only way to replace the glass was to buy it at a home improvement store or craft store. But then, it only comes in certain standard sizes, and we all know that picture frame glass is rarely a standard size – it’s always seems to be just a wee bit smaller than it should be if it’s even close to standard.
Cutting glass and mirror at home is an easy technique that you should try. Put on your work gloves and safety glasses, and you are ready to get started. It’s as easy as measure, cut, and snap!
Measure
On a larger piece of glass, use a felt tipped pen or dry erase marker to draw lines marking the length and width of your needed piece of glass. I always measure 1/8″ smaller than I need my final glass size to be due to the way my glass cutter is set up.
Cut
Holding your glass cutter (available for purchase at craft and home improvement stores) like a pencil, draw a cut using a straight edge on your glass. The cut line will look like a fine white line. Make sure you cut from one end of the glass to the other without picking up the glass cutter. The cut is more a fracture in the glass than an actual cut.
Snap
Once the cut is made, pick up your glass and snap it away from you. The glass should break in a straight line on your cut. Now, you can add it to your glass-less frame.
Cutting glass seems like a hard task, but it really isn’t! My husband was even scared to try it, but once he did, he remarked, “That was very simple!”
