Many public pools were unable to open in time for the traditional kick off to the summer swimming season. Legislation in 2008 mandated that pool drain covers must be installed to help prevent the entrapment and drowning of swimmers.
Although the pool drain cover recall is targeted at public pools, some homeowners may be affected and should inspect their pool’s drain cover immediately if your pool:
- has drain covers that were installed after December 2008
- is an in-ground spa or a wading (kiddie) pool
- has one drain that is not a long channel drain or larger than 24″ x 24.”
These drain covers were tested with faulty equipment during manufacturing and may not meet safety requirements.
All swimming pool owners whose pool’s drain covers meet the above guidelines should contact their drain cover’s manufacturer or call the Drain Cover Recall Hotline at (866) 478-3521.
