While browsing our local Michaels store, I came across these in the woodcraft section and I immediately thought, "Wow, 24 6-sided dice for $4 that I can customize!"
Wooden blocks, or customized dice?
They come in larger and smaller sizes, too (kids gravitate to unusual sizes).
This has endless math applications, and I am sure I can think of some science ones, too, along with other subjects. Maybe something with elements on it? Please comment if you create something interesting!

I actually use blank dice for lots of reading/language activities too: try putting affixes on them then adding the random ending or prefix to a word, put letters on the dice then thinking of words then begin or end with the target letter, or put word stems (like -ot or -in) on them and thinking up words to go in the family. Use prompts like "character" or "plot" on the dice to randomize what aspect of a book to tell about, and put whole story starters on the big dice to get kids writing. Have fun!
Wow, you're right–the language arts applications are abundant, too. Parts of speech, spelling, and I particularly like the narration aspect to focus on different aspect of a story.
