Just because the colder months mean we have an excuse to tuck our luscious locks away under super stylin’ hats like berets & beanies doesn’t give us an excuse to forgo giving our hair loads of love & care! We need to think of our hair in the same way we think of our bodies. We may hide our bodies under extra layers during winter but we are still aware of keeping fit for the sake of our health. In the same way we need to recognize that despite being hidden under an adorable red beret, our hair still needs our attention, even if it may not seem as pressing. Alternatively, think of hiding your hair under a cute hat as the same sort of action as sweeping the dust & dirt from your floor to under the couch – it’s a quick fix but inevitably will turn into a bigger mess to sort out in the long run.
We need to be aware of just what the winter wind & weather is doing to our hair. Cold winter air & blustery rain can leave you with frizzy, dried out, tired looking hair so it is vital to give your hair a little extra TLC during the winter – here are a few tips to keep your hair in top condition, all winter long:
Use treatments such as leave in conditioner and hot oil treatment or a hair mask. They are great for maintaining shine, defrizzing and locking in moisture. You can pick up all of these products in the Health & Beauty aisle at the supermarket. Why not make a girly afternoon of it? Leave in treatment, foot scrub, body lotion massage… all those little body love things you so often deny yourself!
Investing in a product to tame frizz and flyaways is particularly important during winter as the wind gets to our hair and can cause out-of-control frizz. You can pick up some fantastic defrizzing hair products at your local pharmacy or supermarket. Toni&Guy Tame-It Serum, for example, is a fantastic product that tames your hair without leaving it greasy. It retails for around £7 and lasts ages. The smallest amount goes such a long way with this product.
As always, using a decent shampoo & conditioner and a gentle towel dry are important for maintaining healthy hair. Try to avoid brushing your hair while wet as it causes breakages which in turn causes frizz and flyaway. If you have coloured hair, ensure you use shampoo and conditioner especially for coloured hair to help your colour stay locked in for longer.
Be sure to keep up the trims every 6-8 weeks, even if just to take care of dead ends. Getting hair cuts can be expensive, so ask girl friends for recommendations of decent priced and good quality salons.
What do you do to ensure your hair stays gorgeous all winter long?

Wintertime? I use more conditioner than usual, shampoo every 7-10 days with a non-sulfate drugstore shampoo, make sure my conditioners do not have -cones in them. http://www.naturallycurly.com is a great site for haircare, curly or not! I use some of the methods on my somewhat wavy hair daughter…and a good gel too, of course.
