I was okay when American Apparel started stocking legwarmers again. I held my breath when runways began showing colored denim. But this I am not sure I can handle. Ladies, it’s the return of the skort.
You remember this little number. Shorts on the bottom, skirt on the top? Fashion’s version of the mullet?
I was just perusing the new arrivals at Ann Taylor LOFT (the majority of the collection sending my credit card into dizzying spasms of joy), and up popped the skort. I was shocked. I was amazed. And so I leaned back in my chair, and analyzed.
The pro list for the skort:
I have to admit, at first I didn’t realize it was a skort. As my mouse hovered over the photo, I simply saw a cute, versatile, khaki skirt. I was even thinking that I liked the thickness of the waistband — wide enough to give good definition but not too much to take over my short-waisted frame.
Plus it has pockets. And I love me a dress or skirt with pockets.
And, of course, the thing I loved about skorts back in middle school: No accidental flashing.
The con list for the skort:
The back leaves a little to be desired. It doesn’t look like shorts. Nor does it look like a skirt. It looks like a bunch of fabric placed in the wrong area.
The verdict:
While I will be heading to the LOFT soon to pick up some great embellished Ts and perhaps those fabulous sandals. The skort model is wearing? The skort is not for me. I’ll take my chances on the escalator in my skirts. Practicality be damned.
But of course, that’s just me. How do you feel about the comeback?
