I get a ton of questions on everything from what colors to wear, to where to shop and what to buy. I’ve recieved photo text messages from people with pics of them in a pair of jeans in a dressing room…and been followed into the bathroom at parties and asked if something was appropriate for the event.
I understand questions – I also know that real, honest advice is priceless. In an effort to help as many of you as I can, I thought I would take this opportunity to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.
Q: How do you find the perfect bra?
Know your size! To find your size – simply measure your rib cage (just underneath your breasts) – that will give you a number. If that measurement is 34” – then your band size is 34. If the number is an odd number (like 37”), then round up (to 38 for example). Then, measure around your breast line. For example, if that number is 37, then you would wear a 34C – each inch difference (between your band size and breast line measurement) represents an additional cup size. For a more detailed description on how to find your size, refer to a story I wrote for BD a few months ago – you can find it HERE.
Remember, bras are like jeans, you need to find a brand that works for you…try on several.
Q: What is the best way to start to update your wardrobe?
First, clean out your closet. Take a real honest assessment of what you have, and get rid of anything you haven’t worn in the past year, pitch anything that doesn’t fit or shows signs of wear.
Second, make a shopping list. The smartest ways to build a wardrobe is by sticking with a simple color scheme, and create a capsule wardrobe. A capsule is made from different pieces of clothing that all work together to create many different outfits. For example - a black skirt, jean, dress black slack with a denim jacket, black jacket, red top, white blouse, black tank – they all go together, and can be worn in many different ways. For more info on what every closet should have, refer to the story I wrote a few weeks ago about 10 Wardrobe Must Haves.
Next, develop a budget. It is easy to have a list of basics you need to add to your wardrobe, and then go online and spend thousands of dollars. If you keep to a budget, you will be able to get more bang for your money.
Q: How do I tell a co-worker (or friend) that her attire is not appropriate?
This is a touchy topic – but the best way to handle this situation is with kid gloves. Approach her as you would want to be approached, and tell her why what she is wearing isn’t ok. If the problem is poor fitting pants, make a suggestion that you go shopping together. Of the problem seems to be undergarments (or lack thereof), tell her about great sales.
If this is a co-worker, it might be best to talk to your HR person, and refer to the company’s attire policy if need be.
The bottom line is to remember how YOU would feel if someone told you what you were wearing wasn’t appropriate.
Q: I don’t know how to accessorize. How do I get into the accessory game?
Buying key accessories can be a real challenge for some women, however accessories are the BEST way to expand the looks and options you have in your closet. Accessories are also the cheapest and easiest way to add some oomph to your wardrobe.
If you want a few things to add some punch to a new season look, start with color. Colorful beads, shoes and a handbag are a good start. Pick one color that you love from this season, and add some ‘wow’ with that color. For example, an all black outfit with red accessories – or all brown with dark purple.
When looking for what is now and wow – look at the displays in the front of the accessory sections…or what the mannequins are wearing. These items are what the store deems as the newest styles, and the key things that they think will get shoppers in their doors…in other words, the best of what they’ve got.
Q: Where do you shop?
This question always makes me laugh. Where I shop isn’t the best place for everyone. Before heading out to spend some money, you need to define your style. All stores and boutiques cater (somewhat) to a specific style and look. You will save a ton of time if you can narrow those choices before you get in the car.
To define your style, start tearing out pictures from magazines of things you like – take note of the designer – go online and find where you can purchase that designer. If it is a department store, chances are they are going to have options in that look at different price points.

I have seen online bra size calculators that tell you to measure around your bra band area and then add 5 to the number to get your band size. What in the world is that all about?
Kacie – I am SO SORRY it has taken me forever to answer your question. Was traveling, then the holidays -then more traveling…ANYWAY
The add 4-5 inches method is the old way to measure. This technique was developed back ‘in the day’ by Playtex (I think), before the days of spandex and the elastic we love today.
