With summer fast approaching, soon it will be time to bare skin in public that hasn’t seen a ray of sunshine since last year. I am melanin-challenged, and not in a luminous Nicole Kidman sort of way. I am very careful not to burn my skin and I use plenty of sunscreen, so it takes me weeks of being outdoors to get a glow. Luckily there are plenty of products to help me fake it til I make it.
I have been preparing for my pool debut with a wonderful product I recently discovered. It’s a mousse moisturizer by Jergens that gives you a very gradual base of color over several days without that horrid spray tan smell. I love that it dries almost instantly and is so gradual that it doesn’t stain my hands the way most self-tanners do, no matter how carefully I wash.

After using it for a week I am happy to say that I have a nice, natural color with no streaks or blotches. It comes in fair/medium and medium/dark and they also make a version for your face. Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Moisturizer. $8.99 at Drugstores.
Once I get a little golden, staying well moisturized definitely helps my tan last longer. I have been using Nars Body Glow for years. It’s a decadent Monoi de Tahiti oil, which is made by soaking the bud of the tiare flower in coconut oil for ten days and then blending it with vanilla essence and chocolate shimmer. Every time I use it I feel so exotic. The smell is amazing! Body Glow is $59 at Sephora. You can get the mini Body Glow and Body Glow II, the oil without bronzer, for $35.

One of my favorite makeup products for temporary color is Murad Firming Bronzer SPF 15 For Face and Body. It’s a lightweight firming complex containing corn flower and rosemary which promises to increase skin firmness by 32% in 15 minutes. Not only that, it has sunscreen and pomegranate extract to protect skin from environmental damage. This stuff is amazing. It’s a bit pricey at $50, but powerful stuff, and worth it.

Another great product from Nars I’ve been using for a long time is the Highlighting/Bronzing Blush Duo in Orgasm/Laguna. Both of these shades have long been praised as universally-flattering and natural and they are cult favorites. $37 at Sephora.

What are some of the products you use to get your own glow going?

I love Lavera’s self-tanner. Have you tried it? Here’s my review: http://metropolitanmama.net/2008/10/best-sunless-tanner-award-lavera/.
I also really like Arbonne’s No Sun Intended bronzer. The color is warm and “beachy” – and it lasts forever!
I’ve heard great things about Jergens too so I think I’d like to give that a try. Before I do, however, I need to check to make sure that self-tanners are safe to use while breastfeeding.
