Fashion has changed a great deal in the past 30 years and plus-sized fashion has benefited greatly from this change. Gone are the days of having to buy your plus-sized clothes at “Omar the Tent Maker” where only ugly, ill fitting clothes were available. Designers are now providing a wide selection of clothes for the plus sized woman that are trendy, well cut and fashionable. As long as you follow a few simple rules.
- Dress for your size. What I mean by that is that if you are a size 18 or a 20, don’t try to shove yourself into a size 14 or 16. Dressing in clothing that actually fits you correctly looks much better than wearing clothes that are too tight. The same goes for clothing that is too big.
- Embrace your curves. Don’t hide them underneath layer after layer of clothes. A well tailored blouse and nice fitting slacks (and a sexy pair of heels) will do so much more for you than a pair of baggy jeans, a bulky turtleneck and heavy cabled sweater.
- Ignore the trends. Muffin tops? Bad, bad, bad. I’m sorry girls, but the super low waisted, super tight jeans are just not a fashion trend for us. Pair this with a super tight tee shirt or a half cut tee shirt and you are just asking for fashion disaster.
What it really boils down to is this. Dress appropriate for your size, wear well tailored clothing that is suited for your size and avoid the clothing trends that are really aimed at the size 0 crowd and you will be a success. You can be attractive and sexy in any size clothing as long as it fits well and you are comfortable. Today’s fashion allows for smart, beautiful flattering clothes for any size!

Very good! May I add that muffin tops don’t work for ANYONE, even IF that’s the only fat they have on their body?
Well said Lucy.
Very well stated! I wholeheartedly agree, but I also have a dilemma. “Designers are now providing a wide selection of clothes for the plus sized woman that are trendy, well cut and fashionable.” Awesome! Where can I go to purchase such items at a reasonable cost? Lane Bryant and the Women’s section at Target are slim pickings these days! Thanks!
Amen!
