Okay, ladies. Let’s talk bras. Braziers, slingshots, over the shoulder bolder holders. A bad bra can make you look frumpy, slouchy, and messy. A good bra can make you look slimmer, help you stand taller, and make your clothes fit better.
85% of us are wearing the wrong size. 65% of us are uncomfortable. 47% of us are sick of boring bras and want to sex it up a little.
It’s time for a bra makeover!
If you have an Intimacy store (Yes – that’s the place Oprah raves about, too) in your area, I cannot recommend their selection and bra fit specialists enough. The bras are pricey but they are available in more than 90 sizes (A to K cup) and are made to last. They are truly worth their weight in gold for how they make you look and feel.
Here are some tips to getting the girls back up where they belong…
- A firm fitting bra is most comfortable because it doesn’t shift or twist and evenly distributes weight.
- A new bra should fit firmly on the last hook. As the bra ages and stretches, move to the second and third hooks.
- Bras should be positioned level across your body from front to back. Not only does this make a bra more comfortable, but it helps to eliminate back fat!
- Only 10% of support should come from should straps. A snug band should provide the remaining 90%.
- You should not feel the underwire of a well-fitted bra. If you feel the underwire, make sure the cup is deep enough and the band is not riding up.
- If your shoulder straps fall down, you need to go down a band size.
- If you find yourself spilling over the top of your bra, you need to go up a cup size.
- If your cups dimple, you need to go down a size.
- When trying on bras, bring a plain t-shirt to see how your bra looks underneath. It helps to make sure that your silhouette is smooth and your bra fits properly.
- Give your bras a day off to let the elastic rest. Don’t wear bras more than two days in a row.
- Washing machines are too tough and detergents are too harsh. Hand wash your bras with lingerie wash – I recommend Forever New.
And as with all things fashion related…
- Don’t worry about the size on the tag (cause it’s probably never been right before)! Focus on how the bra fits and makes you feel!

Next time I’m in the US I’ll find an ‘Intimacy’ store – sounds like I could use it!
I thought my sloping shoulders were the ‘strap’ problem… thanks for teaching me something today
I’ve learned a lot. I never, ever have bras that fit me right. Next week I’m going to fitted with the hopes of getting it right, but I’ll keep these tips in mind. My dream is to go to Intimacy one day. I’ve heard that they don’t even measure you there. They just look at you and know.
(I’m here via Connie’s recommendation!)
I wonder what the equivalent “perfect bra shop” in Australia would be?
They’d probably hate me anyway, I only like the similar-to-a-tank-top sports bra type bras and I’m not really small enough for them to be suitable!
Connie – You heard right! No measuring tapes, they look to see how your current bra fits and off they go. I get fitted yearly and they have brought the perfect size on the first try every time!
Heather – I can’t rave enough about Intimacy. It’s worth the trip across the border.
Ricky – I’ve been fitted for sports bras and support tanks, too! You wouldn’t believe the difference it makes when you’re workout gear fits perfectly.
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the tips! One of these days I seriously need to get fitted for a new bra … Mine never fit correctly.
I have an appointment in 2 weeks when I go to NYC. I have never been more excited about a bra!
Kameron – You are going to LOVE IT! They are so nice and so helpful and their bras are beautiful! Have fun! (Never thought I’d be so excited about someone else’s bra fitting!)
