You’ve done it while waiting on hold when you’re the next caller. You’ve done it while in class or a meeting. You’ve done it while talking to friends. You’ve even done it when you should be focused on something else. It’s the art of doodling.
Doodling is the art of drawing simple, unfocused pictures while one’s mind is occupied with something else. We often doodle in margins, on scrap paper, or even on old envelopes as a way to channel or focus our daydreaming. We draw people, hearts, stars, flowers, squiggles, geometric shapes, and numbers and letters – anything! But, here is some news to help you feel good about those doodles: it can actually help to improve memory! Studies have shown that doodling during a boring task can actually improve ones’ memory and can increase alertness which helps keep you focused!
So, the next time you find yourself daydreaming or losing interest, give doodling a try. People may think you’re not paying attention, but you can assure them that science suggests otherwise! Plus, your paper or notebook will sparkle with your own artistic expression–it’s you only better!
