The economy is forcing everyone to tighten their budgets. Many of the little luxuries we used to enjoy are no longer as easy on the wallet as they used to be.
Many women are saying good-bye to regular manicures and other spa treatments in favor new budgets and financial goals. But, with a little planning and a little help from your kitchen, many of your fave spa treatments can be done at home for a fraction of the cost!
Keeping these items in your kitchen will ensure you have the means to create your own at-home spa treatments!
- Olive oil – can be used on hands, cuticles, lips, and even in the bath as a way to add moisture
- Cucumbers and tea bags – great for puffy eyes and soothing swelling
- Avocado – great for conditioning hair
- Lemon Juice – can be used to help highlight blond or brunette hair
- Eggs and honey – mixed with a little lemon juice makes a great facial mask
- Mayonnaise – can add great shine and moisture to dull, dry hair.
- Sugar – mixed with a few essential oils it can create a wonderful body scrub
Our kitchens are full of many products that are great for maintaining beauty. Not only are they convenient, but they’re much more economical than what you’d find at the spa. With a little planning and a little research, it can be easy to create your very own spa right from your home!

I actually use a very simple sugar scrub on my face for exfoliation; I still deal with adult acne, so exfoliating has proven to be the best way to keep dead skin cells from piling up and causing more heartache. It’s really simple….
Ingredients:
About 1/8c Sugar
Just enough water to make it look like SLIGHTLY runny damp sand.
Procedure:
Put it on OVER the top of your makeup when you’re ready to take it off by scooping up a healthy dollop and rubbing GENTLY. Rinse with cool water. Dry. Cleanse skin with normal cleansing routine and enjoy your soft, smooth skin.
ONE WARNING: Do NOT use an alcohol-based cleaner after exfoliating. It burns! Oi! It burns!
Very interesting. I like the idea of using products that don’t have chemicals in them for personal care although the mayonnaise in the hair sounds a little messy
I have tried the lemon juice for highlights thing before and it works great.
Hair fix au naturel: especially a couple of days after a perm or coloring – with dry hair and a fine comb, a couple pony-holders, and a big jug of EVOO (yes, extra virgin olive oil) approach the kitchen sink. Apply the EVOO to your hair starting with the scalp and combing through to the ends. There will be dribbles, so hovering over the sink is a must. apply to entire scalp and comb through to ends of hair, squeazing out the excess. Put hair up in ponytails or better yet a bun or knot if it’s long enough. Let EVOO stay on hair for a minimum of 30 minutes then wash out with a small amount of Palmolive (Madge! I’m soaking!) mixed with regular shampoo, followed up with your regular conditioner. Leaves scalp moisturized, hair is soft and shiny, and generally feels healthier after treatment. Be warned: you will crave garlic bread while you do this!
