I loved this commentary that Blissful Style Contributor Kathy Friend had on the Michelle Obama Shorts Drama! Enjoy!
_______________
I feel I would not be doing justice to my profession if I didn’t comment on Michelle Obama’s shorts. I have to say, I think it is crazy the obsession American people and media have with what Michelle wears. Can you imagime the stress that woman goes through every morning as she looks at her closet and says to herself “what should I wear today?” or, maybe more accurately “what should I wear today that the press will find favorable?”
It would drive me to drink.
I won’t condemn Michelle for her clothing choices. I won’t criticize her stylist for bad decisions…but I’ll offer my opinion on shorts over 35.
I have always been of the belief that there comes a time in every woman’s life, when she needs to embrace the idea of modesty in all things. At a certain age, cleavage isn’t so pretty anymore. Likewise, sometimes short shorts aren’t as attractive on us as they may have been when we were in our 20′s.
For my clients who are 40-something, and who may be well known public figures – I would suggest a sophisticated take on casual wear. Why? Because people are mean. If we can do whatever necessary to avoid the harsh comments, we’ve done our job.
In the case of Michelle, I would have simply suggested a walking short – something a bit longer (to her knee). Seeing that much leg on the First Lady (obviously) makes the American people uncomfortable. It’s stupid, but it’s the truth.
So Michelle – if you are reading this – in the future, if you need to bounce some style choices off me, feel free to call. I’ll even give you my cell phone number.

If I looked like Michelle Obama, I’d walk around in a bikini every day. For real.
If I had Michelle’s legs, the nation would be lucky to keep me in pants, let alone have to worry that I would wear shorts.
Shorts, especially nice ones, are appropriate for certain activities like golfing and beach combing. I think way to much attention goes into what she wears. She is attractive, fit and active. It should be no surprise that she wears sleeveless dresses and other clothing that she is comfortable in. Besides, she is a mom. Should she be out on the play equipment with her girls in suit and pumps? She is classy and a fine example of health. I wish I could have half of her motivation and stamina. Good for her!
I think people are over reacting. There is nothing wrong with what she is wearing. It’s not like she has booty shorts on. And she has great legs on top of that! People just need to grow up and worry more about things that actually matter and not what people are wearing. I wasn’t aware that you are only allowed to wear shorts up until a certain age.
Very true. I personally think she looks great, but I can see why her choice wasn’t “first lady” worthy. Then again, MO is a different kind of first lady; she’s very matter of fact. When you are busting your tail in the gym 6 days a week, you want people to know it. I’m over 35 and I wear shorts…even short shorts sometimes, but I’m also in the gym 6 days a week. I feel proud of my legs. They are one of my best assets!
