Practice Safe Sun
Summer is just around the corner. We are finally able to enjoy some consistently warm weather. Unlike the beach, events such as weddings and graduations will cause us to bask in the sun’s rays without thought to protecting our skin.
Skin Cancer Statistics
According to the Archives of Dermatology, approximately two million people develop over 3.5 million non-melanoma skin cancers annually in the U.S. alone. A 350 percent increase over the last fifteen years making skin cancer the world’s most common form of cancer.
Since 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with UV radiation (sun exposure), it is imperative that we jump on the awareness wagon and start practicing “safe sun”. This means wearing some type of protection from the sun. Here are some tips mentioned by the Skin Care Foundation:
- If you wear makeup and/or topical medications the order of application is as follows: To a clean, washed face apply medication first, then moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher, finish with foundation, powder and blush.
- To rid your skin of the blotchy or uneven appearance exfoliate. Using a loofah or other over the counter products you can remove the build up of Stratum corneum (the dead, outermost skin cell layer) giving your skin a smooth appearance.
- Stay in the shade during the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM, if possible. This is considered peak sun hours. If you are in the direct sunlight, remember to use sun screen (remember SPF 15 or higher) and don’t forget your hands and the back of your neck.
The Skin Cancer Foundation lists more than 980 products that carry the Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. Consult their website for more information.
