Smelling Your Way to a Happier, Healthier You
What’s one of the first things we notice about people or places aside from appearance? You got it, smell. No matter how dapper or grandiose something (or someone) appears, nothing turns a person off more than a foul smell. Could you imagine going into a five-star restaurant only to be greeted with the smell of mildew, rotting food or musk? Eww.
The smell of something can either turn our stomachs or turn our heads. And according to new research, aromas can help improve our emotions and overall health.
Ever notice how the smell of fresh baked apple pie or home made cookies tend to melt away all the problems in the world? {Well, almost} Or how smelling your favorite fragrance just puts you in the best mood? It’s not a coincidence.
Fragrances can and do impact our health and our emotions. Here are some of my favorite scents that are sure to get you smelling your way to better, healthier you.
- Orange ~ when I’m low on energy, a whiff of fresh orange zest always gives me the zip I need to make it throw those dull, monotonous days.
- Lilac ~ in Spring my Lilac trees come alive; and every time I smell them, I can’t help but feel every bit as beautiful as they look. Lilac fragrances are calming and soothing
- Green Apples ~ I LOVE green apples. I smell them and I just want to eat them which keeps me from eating other things like cake, cookies or fries.
- Vanilla Bean ~ think “ahhhhh.” Vanilla scents are known to calm the psyche and induce relaxation.
- Peppermint ~ nothing give you that power boost like the smell of peppermint. Rub a dab of this oil on your temples and be prepared to feel invigorated and energized!
- Rose ~ the rose oil smells so sophisticated and relaxing. It induces calmness and rest.
- Cinnamon ~ crisp, delightful and yummy. Cinnamon is lovely “pick-me up” that’s guaranteed to spice up your day. I dab a bit of the oil on light bulbs and wait for the smell to waft through the office. Two words: a-mazing!
Got a scent that does YOUR body good? Pass it on!

I have always been a smell person – my mom often teases me about it! I seem to smell things (usually unpleasant odors) that no one else noticed. And it’s always been very important to me how my environment smells. My only concern is whether or not I might go overboard and overwhelm everyone else’s senses!!
I too am a ‘smell’ person. If something doesn’t smell right, I’m outta there! lol. Like the other reader Lisa L., I also seem to smell unpleasant odors that other people don’t notice. I have a friend who is just like me so I don’t feel so crazy. I happen to be very good at smelling/tasting all of the notes while wine tasting.
I am also very sensitive to too much fragrance. For example, I stopped wearing perfume and hubby stopped wearing cologne because of the phthalates in and the fact that we were both sneezing (our scents are both very light and we only use a spritz once per day). I almost can’t go back to it now. I use a small drop of pure jojoba oil (which is closest to our natural body oils) with a drop of pure 100% essential oil of orange. I then rub it on my neck and wrists. Love it! So natural and I love the scent of oranges.
My favorite scents are lilies, cinnamon, oranges, cucumbers sliced, vanilla bean, eucalyptus and peppermint.
Lisa,
My daughter’s a “sniffer” too. We all are to a certain degree. We’re naturally drawn to things that smell pleasant.
I think that you’re definitely on to something in trying not to overwhelm others. So many people have allergies and potent scents can trigger severe reactions.
But it’s like I always tell my daughter, ” a little dab will do ya.”
Moderation is key and when in doubt, ask. When given the opportunity, I find most people will be honest if asked for their opinion.
Thanks so much for visiting and happy smelling!!
Oooo you love all the scents I LOVE!! *sighs contently*
I also stopped wearing perfume and turned to scented oils. I, too, dab it on my wrists and I opt for a dab behind the ears.
I’ve never tried orange scented oil. Hmm, you’ve got me thinking!!
As always, thanks for stopping by!
