The Power of Stillness
It’s More Than Just Doing Nothing
Whether you’re a Stay-at-Home-Mom, business professional or something in between, you’re constantly on the go. From the time the sun rises until it sets, you: make the breakfast, feed the family, print the report, go to the office, let the dog out, *INHALE*, start the laundry, iron the clothes, wash the dishes, let the dog in, dress the kids, call a truce, make the dinner, *EXHALE*….
WHOA. You’ve got everything in the world to do and not enough body parts to get it done. So, you push harder, run faster and in the end, it gets done–mostly. But at what cost to you?
Think of yourself like a rubber band–durable and flexible. But if you keep stretching the band beyond its capacity, eventually it will snap and break. To ensure you maintain ample balance and flexibility in your life, learn to practice the power of stillness.
Contrary to popular belief, STILLNESS is more than just doing nothing. It’s about giving yourself the space and time you need to recharge your inner battery so that you can efficiently handle the tasks in your life. I’d love to BE STILL but I’m not sure how to do it. I mean am I just going to sit there doing nothing? Hardly.
Learning to BE STILL is all about giving you the time to derive the power you’ll need to be a more effective you. To tap into the power of being still, start with these tips:
- Set aside time ~ start with 5 or 10 minutes. Overtime you can increase it as you see fit.
- Find a space ~ try looking for a space in your home where you feel the most relaxed.
- Light a candle, play some soft music or get a cup of tea/coffee ~ doing these tasks sends a message to the brain thereby signaling that it’s time to unwind.
- Sit and reflect about how truly awesome you are ~ for so many of us we can rattle on about how great others are but we tend to short change ourselves. You make a difference in the lives of those who love and know you. Meditating on this truth will go along way to renewing your sense of self.
- Smile to yourself ~ nothing helps to uplift the heart than smiling or laughter. So smile at yourself. Laugh at yourself. You deserve it!
- Speak encouraging words ~ nothing says “you matter” like speaking words of life, strength and joy into your heart and mind. Words have power. Use them during your STILL time to grow and perfect your self-esteem and self-value.
As you can see, the power of stillness is hardly just doing nothing. It’s an uplifting tool–mental and emotional exercise–designed to encourage the pysche and recharge the senses. Plus, you’ll feel stronger and wiser for having done it.
