Turning Back Time on a Budget
Many women are in a situation today where they are looking for ways to cut their budget and stretch their dollar. I have even seen some women who think cutting back on personal care items is a wise move. Don’t do it! There are so many other nominal expenses that you can do without, that taking care of your skin, hair and body is not one of them!
I recently had a customer tell me that she was tightening her budget and would not be buying her skin care products from me anymore. I was gracious and said, “I understand, whenever you decide to come back, just let me know.” We saw her in the mall about six months after that and honestly she looked at least 10 years older! Her hair had not been cut professionally. Her skin looked dry and flaky. Yet she still had on an expensive outfit! To invest in your beauty, start from the basics, not the exterior!
- Priorities should include a good skin care program that is customized for your skin type, followed by whatever basic supplements that your skin needs. A professional haircut should be at the very least every 8 weeks. One way that you can get more for your money is by visiting your local Cosmetology school on “clinic” days. I was formerly a Cosmetology teacher so I know that students need to get a specific number of hours training in the field. Their work is closely supervised ( and sometimes even done by the teacher) for a small fee, or even free. This is a good place to get your hair color or other services. The down side is that you need to allow extra time. Although you will get good results, be patient because they are still learning.
- Sometimes it’s difficult to eat healthy foods all the time, but try to remember to drink plenty of water. This is good advice for any age. I choose to take vitamin supplements, especially vitamin C and a good multivitamin. Don’t forget to get a flu shot each year.
- My exercise routine is really not what it should be, but walking is good for everyone. During inclement weather, many people turn to mall walking. Have you ever gone to the mall before it opens and see all of the people walking and even running laps?
If you don’t know of a local cosmetology school, check your Vocational-Technical Schools that are part of your public school system. Mary Kay Ash always said, “If a woman doesn’t take time, time will take her.” (She also said that “a woman who will tell her age, will tell you anything”) So we can keep that one a secret! It’s not your age, but how you look and feel!
