BlissDom at the Gaylord Texan

It kind of feels like leaving home, doesn’t it?  After three incredible years at the Gaylord Opryland, BlissDom is moving to Texas.

But never fear!  I visited the Gaylord Texan and did a little recon.  Trust me when I say that it feels like home- only a bit smaller.

Getting to The Gaylord Texan

Unlike the Opryland, which had its own shuttle, the Texan relies on other sources to deliver you to the fabulous resort.

Just minutes from DFW, an easy an inexpensive option is to book with Super Shuttle.  The ride is only $11 each way and can be easily booked online.  After visiting baggage claim to get your luggage, simply use one of the phones in the area to call Super Shuttle for pickup.

Super Shuttle also provides transportation to and from Love Field for $22.

Shuttles depart from the front drive of the Texan daily between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The DFW shuttle departs every 20 minutes, while the Love Field shuttle departs on the hour.  Don’t forget to plan enough time to allow for check in and security!

If you’re feeling extra posh, you can arrange a Town Car pick up through the resort.  The price is a bit steeper ($62 and $74 for pickup), though the service would be quicker as the car will be waiting when you arrive at the airport.  Probably with one of those signs with your name on it.  Want the rock star pick-up? All the Texan directly 1-817-778-2277.

Driving to the Texan?  It’s very easy to find just off State Highways 121 & 114.  Just follow Texan Trail to State Highway 26, turn right and you can’t miss it.  Self parking is $12 per day if you’re staying at the hotel (be sure to ask for the Blissdom discount!); valet is $27.

Not staying at the Texan?  Parking is $17 for  4+ hours.  Having someone drop you off?  No worries there- they can drop you at the door at no cost.

Arriving at the Gaylord Texan

The Gaylord Texan is grand.  As you enter your eyes will be drawn to the massive Lone Star mosaic in the middle of the floor.  Before you, to either side, are two seating areas and beyond those is the atrium.  It’s visually stunning.

Turn to the right to get checked in.

For those of you who may have gotten lost (once or twice) at the Opryland, you’ll be happy to know that the Texan isn’t quite as big so not only will your trek to your room be shorter, but you should only make one, maybe two, wrong turns as you try to find it.

Settling In and Getting Your Bearings

Gaylord Texan roomRooms at the Texan are quite nice and not terribly cramped- even if you are sharing with 3 other people (though someone should plan to bring a power strip).

The resort fee is included in your room rate, so chill those bottles of water.  The resort fee also covers entry to the gym and the nightclub (if you have energy left after the BlissDom parties), as well as wi-fi.

The two queen bed rooms have a desk near the dresser and a more comfortable chair in the opposite corner.  But what I most loved was the dual sinks and plenty of vanity space in the bathroom.

Unlike the Opryland, the Texan has only one central atrium.  You’ll easily find your way through to the conference center or the coffee house in the ‘Alamo’.   This is great news if you’re toting a baby or wearing heels!  More good news for those of you bringing your kids- the Texan is very stroller friendly.  You’ll find elevators or lovely curved ramps near every staircase.

For those of you wanting a work out, the gym is located on the Riverwalk near the Cantina.  It’s not overly large, but you’ll find weight equipment, treadmills and elliptical machines.  If you have a child in tow you’ll want to swap babysitting with friends as the hotel does not have that amenity.

Checked in and waiting on friends?  Return to the lobby, grab a drink from the Sliver Bar and settle into a lovely leather chair by the fireplace.

Check in time:  3pm.  If you arrive earlier all efforts will be made to get you into a room as soon as possible.

Check out time:  11am

Late check out: contact the front desk the day before to inquire; it’s usually not a problem.  Check out can be pushed back to 1pm at no charge.  For later check out – until 4pm – you will be charged half your room rate.

Late flight Sunday?  Luggage storage is available at the bell stand in the lobby until 11pm.  There is no charge for this service (but it is polite to tip $1 per bag – says I, not the hotel).

Dining at the Gaylord Texan.  The Texan has 4 restaurants on site.  Old Hickory Steak House, Zeppole Coastal Italian, Texas Station and the Riverwalk Cantina.  Both Zepploe and the Riverwalk Cantina offer appetizers that are perfect for sharing with friends before the evening events, should you need sustenance.  Old Hickory Steakhouse is a delicious, but expensive, event-type meal, while Texas Station is a sports bar and serves bar snacks, burgers and BBQ.

For transportation… what about taxis? Having baby along I’m not sure I want to do the shuttle and the hotel’s car is expensive.

Thanks for all the great info. I have a question about parking. I have limited mobility and therefore have a handicapped parking tag on my vehicle. In Nashville they accommodated me by providing valet parking at the self parking rate. Do you know how they will handle this at the Texan? Curious because walking very far is simply not possible for me and the valet parking is a bit steep!

    • 14

Let me modify that a little. I do walk but it is painful so any and all opportunities to save steps are a good thing!

    • 15

I would imagine that the Texan would accommodate you as well. As this is a personal question, and not one the would likely do for all the atendees, I would recommend that you contact the hotel directly.

      • 16

Ok … sorry … I didn’t, still don’t, think of this a “personal” issue and you did say “any” questions. I won’t ask any more.

        • 17

I did say any questions, and I’m sorry if I offended you. But, if I ask about this and respond here, on the blog, anyone can use that information to possibly take advantage of the hotel by requesting the same service. If they became overwhelmed by unscrupulous requests, they might not honor it for anyone. I would hate to have people take advantage of your situation and end up hurting you in the process.

Again, I did not mean to offend you and I can certainly check into this if you would like.

          • 18

No. I’m sorry. It was easy enough for me to call the hotel and ask. I apologize for responding harshly. I guess I “anticipate” judgement and see it even where there isn’t any intended. Please forgive me. =)

No worries- and no judgement- here, Beth! Do let me know if you need help “behind the scenes”.
