Her children arise and call her blessed… (Proverbs 31:28)
Mama’s Mixer: The Power of Cake and Prayer
I can remember the sound of mama’s Sunbeam electric mixer churning away. She was making a cake of some kind either for someone who was sick, for a birthday or just because. Regardless of the occasion, every cake was homemade–not elaborate, but for sure the best tasting. I didn’t even know people bought cakes until I got older and to this day, I don’t eat “store bought” cakes. I’m known as a dessert snob to my friends, and I guess I have my mother to thank for that.
I remembered the whirring sound of that mixer throughout my childhood. I knew that if mama got a call and someone was sick, had a celebration or just needed some cheering, the mixer’s purring would soon fill the kitchen. What I didn’t know was that with every baked master piece mama gave, she also accompanied it with many prayers. Before a slice of mama’s cake was even cut, the recipient had been blessed many times over by her prayers. Prayers meant something to my mother–and still do. She believed in them and because of her I believe in them too.
Now that I’m grown and married with a home of my own, I’m not able to hear the familiar whirring of that mixer as often as I like. But when I go for a visit, hearing that old familiar sound brings a smile to my face because I remember all the people who were blessed by mama and that mixer; and I know that the cake they received was all the more sweet because she gave it with her heart and made it with her prayers.
