But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:2 ESV
Do I delight in reading God’s Word? Yes, I can honestly say that I love to read the Bible. However, do I meditate on it day and night? I would have to say, No.
When I wake up in the morning, my first thought is that I wish I could just stay in bed.
When I’m frantically packing lunches, brushing teeth and making sure I have myself and the girls fully dressed…I am thinking that it should not be this way. I should be making pancakes and the girls should be watching cartoons and relaxing.
When I’m picking them up from daycare in the afternoons, I’m thinking that I should have more time with them.
And so my mind runs rampant all day. Do you see how this line of thinking, or meditation, could begin to affect my attitude and my devotion to Christ?
I find myself wondering how it is possible to go from delighting in the Lord to the depths of discouragement so quickly. It’s because, at some point during the day, I am in the Word…I am delighting in the law of the Lord. The problem is, at some point, I really do have to close the Bible and go to work…or go make supper…or go to the store.
So, what happens when we have to go about the normal duties of our days?
That is why this Psalm tells us that blessed is the one who delights himself in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. We have to be able to take what He has taught us and the things we know to be true of Him and meditate on that during our days.
So, there are two things that I believe God calls us to do…
Meditate on His Word all throughout the day. If you are delighting yourself in His Word, God will bring appropriate truths to your mind when you encounter troubles or disappointments in your day-to-day walk.
Look up. It is so easy to focus on what is going on around us. We find ourselves meditating on our current circumstances. We spend emotion and energy worrying about that difficult person in our lives or that situation that we can not change. We focus solely on that one area of our lives that we wish was different. We look everywhere except up.
My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning, I will direct it to you, and I will look up. –Psalm 5:3

Thanks so much! This is just what I needed to see today.
Amen! It’s so easy to get caught up in the world and not focus on Him. Thank you for this reminder to meditate on His word.
You are so right. And even though we are experiencing the worst day ever, we just have to remember that he will always be there for us. And that all that is happening is because GOD has a purpose for us.
