“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
- Matthew 5:16
A friend who visited my home said, “Jeanette, you’d never know it looked like this from the road!” She was right. I had put a lot of energy and time into decorating the inside of my home and the outside showed no evidence. Inside my home was warm and inviting. Outside? Not so much. While reading Matthew 5:16 and her words came back to me. How does the world know what I look like on the inside?
To the casual passer-by on the road of life, what would be different about me? Without speaking a word we can say volumes about ourselves. I don’t mean how we comb our hair or whether we wear makeup or not. But when pressed for time and standing in line at the grocery store and for whatever reason someone is holding up progress, what is my outward appearance? What does that say about inside? Am I letting my light shine so that my Father may be glorified or is that light a flicker barely seen by anyone? All my bible studies and church activity does no good if I don’t live it. If the world can’t see it, how can I expect them to see Jesus in me?

You’re absolutely right Jeanette!
Our light is meant to be a beacon in a time or situation of darkness. And it’s meant to shine in good times and the times where we’d rather run and hide.
A great reminder, thanks so much for sharing it!
I like the verse you used to go along with your thoughts. It really emphasizes God getting the glory – an excellent reminder. Thanks for writing this.
