I have to confess, I am addicted to Facebook.
It’s not the games. I’ve never played Farmville or Zooworld. Plus the title Mafia Wars scares me.
It’s the status updates I love.
I want to know what my family and friends are doing, how they’re feeling and what they’re thinking. I love telling them the same and reading their comments.
- Headed to the store. We need milk…again.
- My kitchen floor was clean for five minutes. I’m sorry you missed it.
- Drinking hot chocolate and sitting by a warm fire. Life is good!
Facebook is a great way to connect with the ones I love and care about.
But you know what?
Someone else wants to know all about my day…and yours.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul tells us to “pray continually”.
I know what you’re thinking. “Pray continually? I have three children under five. I don’t have time to think, let alone pray.”
It doesn’t have to be that way.
Yes, quiet time with God is important. But prayers don’t have to be long or filled with beautiful imagery and complex theology. They just need to come from our hearts. They should reflect what we’re doing, how we’re feeling and what we’re thinking…kind of like status updates.
- Thank you, Lord, for this dirty laundry. That means I have a family to love.
- Father, the baby keeps crying. Please give me the patience I need for her.
- This sunset is beautiful, God. Thank you for all of your many blessings I miss.
God knows our heart. He wants us to know His. That won’t happen if we don’t share our day with Him. So next time you’re thinking about updating your Facebook status, think about updating God instead. You might be surprised at the comments you get in return.

I loved this post!
And I am so going to use the line..”My kitchen floor was clean for five minutes. I’m sorry you missed it.”
That is great!
Loved this post! So true and something I had to learn how to do when I became a mom. No more “set times” to pray or have quiet times…. it became a constant fellowship of “status updates.” Great post!
Thanks ladies! I think it’s important to take the guilt out of it. It shouldn’t be about what we “have” to do. It should be about sharing our lives with our Heavenly Father.
Stacy, glad you liked the kitchen floor comment. You are welcome to use it any time!
What a great reminder…
I’ve never thought about FB like that before…I LOVE it…but what I love even more is that personal one on one intimacy with GOD…prayerfully now when I think of updating FB I’ll be sure to update HIM…checking in with our Daddy is needful!
I tell my kids that all the time…now I must remember to do the same!
Love how you pulled this together…what a great lesson!
BTW, I came by way of Sherry!
Prayer + Status Updates = God’s Reply!!
I LOVE it, Alicia!
Thank you- I won’t read my FaceBook home page quite the same way again…
So true! He wants us to pray continually so giving a status update/prayer is good!
So true!! Wonderful post!!
We should always be giving God our firsts.
But, I do fall short daily when it comes to this. I try not to read anything before I read His word (in the mornings), but sometimes I find myself going straight to the computer.
Thank you for this reminder, friend!
I love this post! Great reminder to continually talk to God in our crazy (but joy-filled) days as moms!!
Awesome. I love this post and the idea. Way to look at things in a more positive way too.
perfect post. i love fb for the same reason. i have not played any farm, zoo, fish, etc game. :0)
and good thing for facebook…or you would’ve been left in the dark til today about my blog post. :0) lol.
This certainly did make a great point to me, I spend too much time on the computer. I need to spend more time with God. Yes my floor is still not clean, after the kids are grown!
Such a great post Alicia and so true!! Thanks for the wonderful reminder!
