Do you ever wonder if God is listening?
I know I do.
Usually, it’s when I’m not getting the response I want that I figure he is just taking “voice mail” and doesn’t want to call me back. I begin to think, “What’s up with this? I’ve left messages, sent up quick and easy texts, short e-mail like prayer all day, and even the regular pray forEVER about this and still no response!?”
I guess in the world of immediate response through e-mail, texting, and voice mail I figure that God will behave the same way.
You might wonder if your friend is upset or–the nerve, unavailable–because that e-mail reponse didn’t come right back the minute you sent yours. Or what about when your call goes to voice mail, do you ever wonder if your call was screened and (gasp!) ignored?
I imagine you can relate.
Too often I attribute human characteristics to God. Too often, if He doesn’t behave exactly the way I want Him and in the time I expect Him to, I end up wondering if the message is even getting to Him.
According to His word, He IS hearing. And I’d wager that just because our society has sped the response time up, God is by no means going to live according to our microwave world just because we like the way it works. (Do we? Or does it just stress us out?)
Maybe God likes His idea of waiting on Him because He knows what it produces. That kind of waiting produces all the good stuff that I might not want to learn. Once again, He is much smarter than I am.
The Spirit gently reminds me that His ways are not like mine. I can go to the spiritual bank on this: He is listening and He will do what He wants to do for me for my best interest in the best time He sees fit.
And He’ll do the same for you.

Yes, I imagine that when it comes to God, He’s more of a gourmet, seven-course chef than a microwave, tv-dinner type. We forget sometimes, but, He knows exactly what He’s doing.
Thanks Natalie, you are totally right about our expectations of quick responses and jumping to conclusions if we dont get them. I love the verse, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him” from Lamentations 3:21-26. Thanks for the reminder!
