Words To Dwell On

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthyof praise, dwell on these things.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthyof praise, dwell on these things.
Phillippians 4:8 (NASB)
How, in the middle of the insanity that is life, are we supposed to “dwell on these things”? One thing I have found helpful is to place Scripture, literally, in front of my eyes.
- There are many websites that make adhesive words for walls, but my favorite is this one. For high traffic areas, pick a verse that means something to your family, that inspires you to live better. Put words over the main door of the home. Then, whether you are coming or going, you are reminded to “think on these things.”
- Leave your Bible open in a spot where you spend lots of time. Changing many diapers a day? Open up your Bible to Psalms and set it on your changing table; you could make it through five to seven verses a day, just in diaper changing time. You don’t have to sit down and spend 30 minutes in meditation. The point is to fill your heart and mind with Scripture. Take in one verse and then carry it with you as you wash your hands, dishes or clothes. Ponder His words, rather than why there are always crumbs underneath the piano and who left the milk out. It may be slow progress, but it is worthwhile.
- Choose Bible verses for each room in the house. Print them out on pretty paper and put them on each door. As you enter each room, you are gently reminded of something “true, honorable, right, and pure.”
- Keep a stack of verses you want to memorize by your blow dryer. I know someone who memorized the entire book of Philippians just in hair drying sessions. Tape verses to your mirror, the top of your shower, anywhere you spend more than 20 seconds standing. We all have to face personal hygiene at some point in our day. Isn’t it nice to think we’ll also be facing a moment spent in Scripture?
Take these ideas and expand on them. Make them your own. Make the Scriptures your own. And be filled with good and excellent things.

Lora Lynn, thanks so much for these ideas! I love the idea of being surrounded by the Word.
Lora Lynn,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these ideas! That is also one of my favorite verses too!
I love that you mentioned having the Bible at the changing table, even though my kids are WAY past that stage, I can still have a Bible in every room ready and available to read.
A few things that we do to keep Scripture in front of us is;
* We post Scripture up back the back door (Colossians 2:8) so the kids see it before they walk out into the world.
* We have family deovtional time every morning (for about 5-10 minutes).
* I carry a spiral index card in my car that has some verses in it that I want to memorize, I also have another one by my bed that I like to look at as well.
There are so many great ways…thank you for sharing yours…they are AWESOME!!!
xoxo,

This is great. You might also like to have a look at this musical / visual tool we’ve developed which sets verses to music and pictures to aid with bible memorisation. Its called WalkingBible and offers 900 verses for download completely free charge at http://walkingbible.com. WB works on a computer (with a software rehearsal program) or simply on a MP3 player. I’ve also put together a quickstart set for use in Sunday Schools or with kids – just twenty verses that are easy to get going with (http://blog.walkingbible.com/2008/10/31/walkingbible-short-ones-1-great-memory-verses-for-kids/).
