Take a peek at the sites that break tech news and you’ll notice new social media tools being launched almost daily. It’s impossible for the average blogger to keep up. But if you can’t participate in every social media site, you might still want to consider signing up for all of them.
Your Brand And Protecting It
Whenever I hear of a new application or social media site being launched, I usually head over immediately and grab the “phatmommy” user name. Many of us treat our online identity as a brand. Our name, URL, logo, tag line, and design are important to us, and it’s just as important to protect that brand.
New Social Media Tools
What if a service isn’t that popular at first, then explodes on the scene? By the time you sign up, someone could have taken your name. Being forced to use a name other than your “brand” or “blogger” name can cause confusion and possibly fragment your audience. And of course none of us wants to be in a situation where someone else is using our brand name on a social media service and posting undesirable things.
Online Identity And Brand Protection
Here are my tips for protecting your online identity and brand:
- Purchase your domain name and several others that might be similar. Domain names are pretty cheap at GoDaddy.com, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Be an early adopter. Keep an eye on tech news and sign up for social media tools ASAP.
- Choose a unique user name and stick with it across all social media services.

Great advice! I’ve had to go to melsboxofchocolates for many of my new applications because a box of chocolates is just too general. Looking back I wish I would have named the blog something different, but who would have thought I would have stuck to my blogging world for so long. The end isn’t in sight either!!
I wish I had read this before I started blogging because I chose a really common profile name which is never available anywhere. I am wondering if it is better to change everything to my blog name only or at least chose a name that can be universally used across the social networking sites. And I seem to be in plurk hell where not enough karma can be made to change my name.
My blog isn’t very popular or well-known, but you touched on some things I would never have thought of in regards to social media.
